TAFT AST 1HIYAX COMPARED.
A clear comparison of Taft and Bryan is made by
lincoln Steffeiw in the 'July Everybody's. Mr. Steffens
w iWvioveorl ilin Di-esidcntial candidates upon their
Views of conditions and the following is a summary of his
conclusions: ..,,
V "These two men do not differ essentially in the Imal
; analysis of their programs. They would return to con,-
petition, which socialism and the 1 rusts would abolish.
They want the struggle for survival 1o go on; it is to he a
fair' fight, but a fight, and for wealth, too, even between
capital and labor. Bryan, having hndiuore tune to reflect
' and having lived out west, where the problems of business
"and polities are clearer and simpler, sees them more defi
nitely tlian Roosevelt and Taft, who have been men of
' action- always. For example, Bryan goes at the problem
of poverty consciously. All his policies are directed, as
he himself points out, at excessive wealth, which is, at
bottom, the same as excessive poverty. And besides the
remedies listed above, he advocates an inheritance tax and,
more important still, 'a tax on incomes as a regular item
in our fiscal system.' So does Taft advocate these meas
ures but Bryan sees their relation to other taxes.
The constitutional objection of the supreme court Bry
an meets with a proposition to amend the Constitution.
Taft regards this as unnecessary. Indeed, Taft doesn't
want any more legislation than is necessary to make our
present laws effective. And there we have a big differ
ence between the two men.
"Bryan sees the part privileges play in our system;
lio wees it, elcarlv as a case of injustice, and he would legis
late and legislate and legislate
artificial advantages that, are granted hy govcrnmem.
"Taft. a nroved executive and a born judge, would
denend upon the executive to
vne-uelv seen. Bryan is not
there is reason to fear that he is no better judge of men
than Roosevelt, to say nothing of Taft; but seeing the end
more cloarlv, he would not depend so much upon the men
he appointed and the courts to prevent and punish evi
as he would upon legislation to remove the cause.
"And, unlike Taft, but very much like Roosevelt, Br.v
an would preach and teach and lead.
"We must not onlv see to
tiike uwav the prizes that, make men pursue a low ideal;
we must all of us as individuals strive to inculcate higher
ideals in others.' Taft should give us better government
of things as they are; Bryan, leading us on to change
things, should make us better people."
4 - J That the prohibition tide in the south is already begin
ning' to recede is proven by the defeat of former Senator
Carmack Saturday in the Tennessee democratic primaries
by Governor M. R. Patterson for the gubernatorial nomin
ation, after one of the hardest fights on record. Carmack
was the champion of state prohibition.
