STATE TO GAIN 840,000 THROUGH BONANZA LAND The state of Oregon is in a fair way to gain $10,000 through state lieu land selections made several years ago and concerning which an investigation has Just been closed at Lakeview. In 1002 the stato made selections aggregating 5OU0 acres in a solid tract near IJonau ica, Klamath county. The selections were mode at the instance of persons who made application to the stato to purchase the land at the prevailing price, $2.50 per aero. As the haw upon which the land was selected was uncer tain, the matter was held up for several years in tho land department at Wash ingtou. When other land-fraud transactions were uiub'r invest igat ion, State Land Agent Oswald West investigated the ap plicants who hail applied for this f000 acres, atid he found some suspicious looking circumstances. When invest! gated, the applirants became delinquent in their payments, (inventor Chamber lain moved the cancellation of the cer tificates. A lot of homestead filings were made upon the same land, and the homesteaders proceeded to question the state's right to the land under its se lect ions. In the meantime Mr. West had per fected the title by subst it ut ing good base for bad, whore there were defects, and the state's right as to -4000 acre was made safe as against the home steaders, some of whom, it in believed, were more nnxitniH to get the land for it- timber than for its value as home sites. The state stands upon its record title, which is prior to the hoiu'siad fili tins. COMMUNICATIONS. A. S. Bliton's Bemedy for Hard Times. When V. (1. Taft. republican nom inee for president, was making one of! his prosperity speeches in New Vork not lung since a jobless man in the au dience, asked him what a man without I BUTTE FALLS ITEMS. DEVELOPING PROSPECTS IN WINDY HOLLOW The gilt edged literally gilt edged! prospects in the Windy Hollow hills have at last passed into the control of real live mining men. who have money with which the develop them. J. J, 4ii'ily, a. Nevada mining man, novornl months ago prospected and sain pled the Jumbo, Hut to and other claims of the Loft us group. Ho liked it. all so well that he interested other Nevadft mining men, T. H. Oliver of Spokane, M. 1(. Jennings of Ibiflalo and Marcus Oilliam, and returned to Windy Hollow pevernl weeks ago. The parly looked over the ground, sampled it thorough ly, and had assays made. Then they went to work to acquire control of the Jumbo and Hulte groups. Recently a deal was consummated by which they liave entire control of those two groups. They are sinking on the Butte and are highly pleased with Ihe showing. Last wei-k a b-dge was struck, and the ore in places is literally plastered with gold, way the Lakeview (h-rnld. Whilst in Xevnda, these gentbnien snmpled many of the famous mining camps, including the famous Ran'hide group, and they state most emphati cally that nothing in nil tlmtw ramps could compare with tho proect iu Windy Hollow. These gentlemen did noi talk f'r pub Hcation; they are not wiling stock, the proposition is not a stork affair; tlo-y are simply mining on their own Recount and have nothing to sell or boom. LAND LOCATOR HELD FOR FRAUDULENT LOCATIONS Information from Crescent City, f'ul., Is to the i Afoot that (ieorge W. Taylor, known h-r. as a land locator, has b'en held then. under bail of $4000 on a felony chaise of obtaining money under faNe pretences in fraudulently locating land se. ki rs on Iel Norte county tim ber laud. His examination took place before a just ire of the p-ace in Cres cent City on the 11th. it is said the nut horities there have evidence that Taylor fraudulently located 12 erons and that they "now have him where he cannot Ho any more def rnuding for omo time," Taylor is reported to have done considerable crooked work in Cur ry county, nnd there hat aUo been com plaint of his work in Pouglas county. a jot. and unable to get work was to do. His reply was "find knows; T don t." Tn looking over tho Medford Pnily Mail of the lth I find that the editor of the Mail has a remedy for hard times. Here it is: "Say, you knocker. Does it do your self or anybody else any good to whine about hard times, ral or prospective! And would it require less effort or be a less agreeable task to help the fellows who are trying to build up instead of tear down? Good times aud bad are the result largely of the temperament of the people, who seem to take spells of being grouchy aud despondent for no apparent reason. It is to offset these periods that the philosophers of good cheer and good times form their "boost- " clubs and "don't worry" societies -and you ought to bo initiated into both before vou become a chronic nial- i ontent. ' ' From the best information obtaina ble at the present time, there aro from l.nno.noo to o.OOO.OOO men nut of cm ployment in the Cuited States fjuite a large number tn become "grouchy' ull at tho same time, "fur no apparent reason." Xot long ago' Mr. Rockefel ler predicted that there would be 10,. OOO.nOtl of men out of employment dur ing !uu7 and MtW in the Tinted States. He did not give ns the reason that the men would become "grouchv,' but that ftidustrioR would close down. Tho 4.000,1(00 or fl.000.00n nut of em ployment today did not ijuit work on their own account. They tpiit as' ftlitnn would have it hevause t he owners of t he different industries in the I'nited States became " grouchy " and shut, up shop. Some of the bankers got grouchy' and closed their banks. Itli- ron says to the hungry and jobless man. don t "knock; if you are hun gry, but "boost boost," no matter it your wife and children iire without rood and hungry "without any apparent rensou. ' "Join the Pon t W orrv so iety. " He should also have advised them to join the Immunity Ralh club and they would come out pure as AVas son ea'nvon water. Now, Mr. jobless man and men in general, what do vou think of a man. man ho can bo called, that would write such stuff for an intelligent com munity to read ! T rather think it is pluto matter, furnished by the Xntiminl Prosperity club that has just been or ganized in St. Louis, Mn. W. J. DIH'MimX. John A. Moore of the unsurveyed left for Medford Wednodnv to consult uu opticiau. Mr. Moore reports that rew of surveyors has left for tb unsurveyed section and will begin to j survey this section, all of which is most lelcume tn the worthy homesteaders lo ated ou these lunds. An Interesting Phase of the Temper ance Question. One interesting and peculiar phase of the temperance ouest ion lies in the fact that when certain leaders in Jack son count v a lew vears ago were sac rificing time and money and popular ilv even in tin- interests of what thev it that, t inie believed tn he a proper and ueerssnrv work, t In same persons who now pose as leaders in the move ment were offering their ridicule and abuse to those leaders in the most un s'tnriug manner. And ministers of the gospel even, as well as lay members f the churches, went so far as to stab iu the back men who had given their, life to the "cause." If tomorrow the tide were suddenly to turn and the popular vote on the temperance quest ion swing to its for mer majority level for the maintenance of tint saloon, you would witness the ;i musing spectacle of a general stam pede ou thi part of t hesn pseudo-re formers back to a favor-begging posi tion. Why? Itecause tho weaklings as a rule Hwing always with majorities. thinking thereby to be always on the popular and money making side of the piestion. It is easy to go with the Trowd. It takes a man of strength to resist the crowd. D. H. HAWKINS. LOCATE TIMBER CLAIMS UPON ABANDONED MINES Myrtle CreeK Mail. Through a desire to gain possession of valuable timber land, much of which will bo good for grazing and agrtcnl- lural purxises when cleared of the brush and timber, some' ."i different partus have located claims in the vicinity of the rdd North Myrtle mining region during the past year. A number of these claims are on nnsurveyeil land, while others are on land h- ld as mineral when the gold fever once singed through t he veins of the ever credulous gold seeker. Want! Varker brought in a large load of feed for Merchant Hughes new store There is a righteous indignation among the homesteaders as to the un just and undeserved treatment which they have received at the hands of the government, aud it is uot to be won dered that they do not feel friendly disjKtsed when instead of reuderiug aid to these men who have isolated them selves from all civizilcd comforts and buried themselves for vears iu the wil lerness. Apparently every obstacle is thrown iu their way. The lies by ma licious falsifiers are allowed to in flu- nee officials and the eager ambition of men seeking promotion permitted to sway the judgment against a set of men who have done so much towards the opening up and the settlement of . country which a few years ago was omparatively unknown. The govern ment and homesteader should be found in friendly attitude towards each other, but this will not be brought about if the present policy of regarding every homesteader as a criminal is continued. It is from the ranks of such men as these homesteaders that the voters and soldiers are drawn. A DVEKTISEM KNT FOR RIDS FOR I'CHCHASK OF A H II L A X I) FLOCKING MILLS AXO ' OTIIKK I'ltOPFRTy.
