AND GET GOOD WIFE
EDOEWATER PARK, N. J., Juno
17. A marriuge of much interest in this
section, was solemnized nt Riverside
rocently when Josoph Busby was mar
aud, to Mrs, Sarah Borton of Pitts
burg, Pa. The wedding was the out
come of a romauco of 45 years ago,
when the pair then in their teons, ex
changed love assurances at the old Coop-
ertown schoolhouse. They made plans
for their wedding, which failed to oc
cur at that timo, tho young folk hav
ing quarrelod nnd the engagement be
ing broken off.
Miss Sarah Evans, Mrs. Borton a
maiden name, left this section and went
to Pittsburg, whero sho married Mr.
Burton. Busby, failing to effect a
reconciliation, married six months Inter
a Miss Vauscivor, of Bovorlv.

CLOSING OUT BOOZB
AT BARGAIN PRICES
PRI NEVILLE, Or., June 17. Only
few moro davs until Cook county
enters the dry column, and liquor deal
ors have begun to close out their stocks
at any old price. It is estimated there
aro about 800 gallons of liquors yet in
the city, mostly whisky, and all this
will, bo disposed of before July 1 to
those who are in position to buy by
the gallon, so that the thirsty citiren
will have enough on hand to last him
several months.
Aftor that, a conservative estimate of
tho amount of money that will be sent
to Shaniko from Crook county for wot
goods places it ot between $4000 and
45000 a month.
Tho Shaniko city council has wisely
declined to issue licenses to any out
side saloon men, preferring to divide
tho business among its own citizens,
Prinevillo men who have sought to
secure lienss hove met with a blank
refusal, the pretext being that the coun
eil was afraid Shaniko would vote dry
next election if the saloon business was
overdone at this eime.
A Girt Who Can Stand the Abuse of the
Public Is Well Trained for Anyone
What Central Has to Undergo From
Patrons and How She Manages.
" Young man," said the telephone su
perintendent, 'Make my advice and mar
ry a telephone girl if you have simply
got to marry someone.
'MVhyf Well, there are all sorts
of reasons. But in the first place, as
well as second l, thirdly and fourthly,
she will have a good disposition. When
you come home late for dinner or leave
your pipe in the parlor or commit some
other deadly siu she may do r, lot of
thinking, but she won't say much, and
y u will have the laugh on all the other
husbands of girls who are not properly
trained.
'You see, a telephone girl learns
first and foremost to let other persons
do tho talking. If she didn't the com
pany woud lose most of its subscrib
ers inside, of a month. Sho sits for
hours ot a time in front of a board
covered with lights and switches and
plug and administers constantly to the
wants of a lot of folks who are abso
lutely itching for trouble.
"Did you ov r hear a woman, for
instance, get busy at tho phono? First
sho calls n number, usually in a voice
that defies any combination of elec
tricity nnd wires to transmit. Some
times aho gives the right number. Not
always. It proves to be buny.
' 'Call me, Central,' says the lady at
the phone. Then she goes away, sits
down in a chair and fusses. Iu a
minute she is back ut the wire again.
' 'That number still busy!' she asks.
"Sho doesn't say whnt number. Cen
tral hns been working both hands and
everything inside of her fcend mean
time, but the lady doesn't care. Cen
tral ought to have remembered the
number.
" 'What number?' she tmqrta. 'What
number? Why 1 ,jut told you the num
ber not a minute ago.' As a matter
of fact she has forgotten herself. How
ever, she finds It again nnd is again
informed tluit it is busy.
"'Well, just hurry them up she
says.
"Just like that. What do you sup
pose would happen to Central if she
hurried them up? How would the lady
like to be hurried up? But Central says
she will do Iht best.
" Wrelehed serviee, ' remarks the
lady an she nits down. In a minute
nure xlie is up again.
' ' Central,' she fusses, eau 't you
get me that number f I've been for
ili.OhiHt half hour trying to get it. Yes.
in eonrxe, that's the number. So busy
talking Iu the girl next to her that she
doesn't pay any attention. 1 know per
fectly well that there i u reason on
earth wbv I cau't have that number.
'it's just pure pervernity. What's thai?
Busy! (Hi, that 's perfect nonseune. on
told me that before. It is? Well, you
give me the manager.'
What Central Has to Take.
Central does not answer her back,
whieh spoils half the fun, and almost
before sho knows it she is conuected
with the manager, who is put there to
meet just such complaints. He invest!
gates and finds that the number is still
busy, tie tells the lady as uuu-h.
"She believes the manager, hut still
olauies Central for not giving her the
u umber iu the first place. She is sure
the wire was uot busy when she first
called.
"Well, young nuiu, Central has to sit
and take that for hours at a time and
say nothing but 'Busy, I'll call you,
and once in a while gets a chanee to
switch off on a few numbers.
"It's hard training them. More girls
fail to make centrals than there are
that succeed. It simply isn't in the na
ture of the sex or any other Rex. for
that matter, to sit and tako it from
all sides and say nothing in return. But
they learn, and when they have mas
tered it they never forget.
"So, if you've got to marry, pick
out n telephone girl from preference."
