The station keeper reported today
that on Sunday morning ho sighted the

of the Columbia rivor, headed in. It
was soon enveloped in a fog, but when
tho air became clear agaiu tho sloop

and his men at once instituted a search
but no trace of tho craft or the three

EASTERN BUYERS NOT

Siileni prnuo packers huve thus far
had no inquiry from the east for prices
on the 1108 crop and they are uiakiug
no ofters. Neither aro tho packers try

Moth II. S. Mile Sc Co. and Tillson & Co.
take the view that il is worse than nso-
less to quote prices when there is no
di'ttuind, says n Salem dispatch.
" Eastern buyers are not interested
and if we should quote prices now we
would have difficulty in raising them
later, while the jobbers would expect
us to lower them," said H. S. Oile to
day. "The crop in the northwest is
hort, amounting to about one-third,
or at the outside one half of last year's
.-rop. The situation is, therefore, favor
able so far as prices are concerned. Of
course, so long as we nre not selling
we cannot buy, and then' is no con
tracting with growers yet."
At this time las, year over half the
prune crop of the northwest had been
