lOOPINO THE LOOP.
From all parts of Oregon whuh were
voted dry in the reeent election cotnett
the story of municipal fiunuciul strin
gency in cities where the revenue de
rived from liquor licenne has beeu cut
off, and many are the expedient tlmt
must be resorted to iu order to lo
the loop of a busted treasury.
In towns like Gniuta Vrhh, KoHelmrg,
Medford and Klamuth Falls the city
revenue is decreased from $5000
$10,000 annually, and the mime, propor
tion holds good Tor the aiwiltcr places,
some of which, like Silver! on, face
bankruptcy,
Boneburg loses $9000 a year, 15 sa
loons and a brewery being put out of
business. There is no atone? in the
funds for street lighting and other inn
nicipal expenses dependent upon this
revenue. Orauts Pass Iohcs the revenue
from ten saloons and a brewery. Klein
ath Falls closes 12 saloons and a brew
ery. Med ford, if the prohibitionists
win out In the CourLa, loses the lireuse
money from 11 saloons. In ull these
cities Cho ice plauts are preparing to
close, mm they cannot run at a profit
without saloon patronage, and the price
of ice has already been doubled at
Grants Pass and will be in the other
cities.
Klamath Falls is to mine an uceupa
tion tax. and probably other citiea will
hare to adopt the same expedient, fol
lowed nfter by an increase in the tax
levies. All bun mew firms and profen
Hionul men are being eluxHified and
will be taxed accordingly. The taxes
will range from $23 to $100 per year.
There is alrto talk of the poll tax. Al
the, next meeting, the Klamath Fa lit
city council will fix the schedule.
If the courts decide that Medfurd'fi
eh art r is iuvalid and prohibition n in
effect, au occupation tax will undouht
edly hove to bo renorted to here. A
many of tie merchants worked and
voted for prohibition, they will un
doubtedly cheerfully pay their $100 a
year to make up the treasury deficiency,
and of course the preachers will set a
shining example tn all professional men
by corning through with their $LT right
off the bat.
EXPLAINING THE CANDLE-POWER.
tu illuuiiuntiug circles one hears a
gfeat deal about "candle-power" and
nearly everyone, if asked, would in
Ktantly reply that u candlcpower wan
the light given by a ainglc candle. But
candles differ Iu luminosity as well an
Incandescent lamps, and candle power
is not oue thiug, but aevernl, accord

In Great Hritain und the I'nited
Btates the standard light unit is the
amount given by ft "spermaceti can
die burning up at the ratn of 1 120 grainn
an hour with a flame forty five mill i
meters high," or 1.76 inchen. In Franc
the standard candle is made of stearine,
sod Germany's candle was, until a fe
years ago, paraffine. Now the little
country uses the so-called Hefner unit
or ugui, tue amount given by a certain
form of lamp burning netelatn of amyl
Another lamp standard, culled tlie enr

MEDFORD, June 11. To the Editor:
T h t . M ed f o id Mail of Juno 9 says :
"( unimings is in from survey and that

In u satisfied with the conditions that
exitd regard the water aupply, etc," I
don't know that any man would dig
puto Mr. (.'uiitmings' slnteiiieut us to
the, n up ply of water in Wassou canyon
at the )-r-iit time. Hut wh:it duth Mr. j
('unimings know about the amount of
water there is in the canyon in the dry
seaBoitf At the present time there is
plenty of water iu Hear creek, but none,
or very little, in the drv season.
Why is it that the committee of tlo-
eity council and Mr. flauley are nbout
the.oulv ones that contend that there
is sufficient water in the canyon to sup
ply the city, when so many men that
ure just as honest and have no tinnncial
interest in it say that there is but little
water there in a drv season und that of
a very poor quality? Let us be sure
Why take any chanceaf Why did the
eity council require an indemnifying
bond if they are so positive about the
water aupply f Tietter get the water
out of Rig Butte, where wo would need
no fake bond to guarantee the amount
of water. Let us have plenty rather
than take chances on an insufficient
supply.
I don t wish to question the sincerity
or honesty of the committee of the citv
council, but they may bo honestly mis
taken oh good men have often been,
think it would be a good idea to put
stop frri any further expenditure of
money untiyl there is a satisfactory mi-
rslaading, satisfactory to a majority
of the taxpayers, as well as the city
council.

MANY ARTESIAN WELLS
IN WOOD RIVER VALLEY
FOR HALE S. N. Subdivision is in the
market now; choice tea-acre tracts.
best location in the valley, h. Nee-
detneyer, Jacksonville.
Wood River valley may appropriately
lie termed the land of artesian wells.
Already there are tli wells flowing
steady streams, and in many instances
l he water is forced from II to 11 feet
ibove the level of the ground. Thi
welU range in depth from 110 to C'W
'Vet, and the water is cool and clear
'link mg it suit able for all uses, savs
the Klamath Falls Herald. It is but
short t iine since the tirst artesian
well was link, but bv the close of this
limn there wilt be no less than :0
well in the valley. It is only a mat
ter of n nhort time until every home in
t he valley will be getting its water
Mipplv from an artesian well, for in
ry part of the valley whore the ex
periment has been tried it has been s tie-
ess fill,
In the Houth end of tbe valley there
re well that flow flu gallons per mill
ute tmm a two meb pipe nnd the water
thrown as high as 1! feet above
i ho ground level. The temperature of
the water is 37 degrees, but five above
he freezing point. Some of the par
t hi iu the valley ron template exper
iment ing with four inch pipe in order to
iuereaie tbe How so that it will be of
tumV ient nlnnie to be valuable in the
rrigiitinn of the lands of thst valley.,
nide from being used for hounebold
1 stork purposes the water is being
used liy msiiv in nrrlgating small paten
id fine gardens are being raised.
The fact that artesian water abounds in
Wood River valley should lead to ex
perinients in other parts of the eouuty.
If artesian flows could be found in the
Klamath basin it would be a material
id iu the development of the country
