GOOSE LAKE ROAD
SOON A REALITY
CHARLES CITY, IOWA,
VISITED BY TORNADO
FISHING THREATENED.
There Is no dodging the fact that
game fishing in the Kogue river and
its tributaries is threatened with ex
tinction. Unless somethtug is done to
i protect trout the pastime will soou be
upon the same plane as it is in the east
where the utmost skill is required to
secure half a dozen small fish in a day.
Never before hnve fish been as scarce
at this time of year in Jackson county
st re Am s as they are now. An export can
spend a day, scarcely hutching enough
for a meal, and the conditions ure grow
ing worse.
Perhaps the new master J'ish warden
can offer some relief. Mr. Van ltisen
wan hopeless. He did not earn what
became of the fish iu southern On-gou
so long us toe Astoria fishermen had
the right to slaughter salmon by wlnde
sale. The solution of the fishing problem,
-mid one which every rod and gnu club
in the state should work for, is a slate
license for anglers, the money thus
raised to bo spent in fish protection
and propagation. The annual stocking
of streams and the protection of tliom
already there will afford every xpurts
moo opportunity for enjoyment.
' WORK ON UMATILLA PROJECT
PROGRESSING SATISFACTORILY
HAN ERANOIHCO, Calif., Juno S.
That work on the Umatilla reclamal ion
project In Oregon is progressing satis
fuctorily nud will bo rushed to comple
tion as soon as possible, is the slate
meat made to the (Tinted Press by sec
rotary of the interior Jauies K. liar
field, before he sailed this morning on
the battleship Muino for Honolulu.
' After a tour of inspection in the Ha
' walian Islands, Secretary UartieKl will
visit Oregon to note the progress of the
- work and mako recommendation as to
' what ahull be done. Although he will
make no positive statemeut, it is thought
'that he will iuvestigato the disputes in
-the islands in regurd to taking of lerri
torial lands by the Chinese and Japan
ese. Tho trip to Hawaii is of a gen
erul nature fur statistics, and the labor
question will receive a large share of
bis attention.
la speaking of the labor question to
day, the secretary was reticnnl. He
- would make no statement as to hit-
intentions, but it is understood that h
'Will look closely into the competition
between tho white and yellow races.
Governor Freer has arranged the itin
erary of the trip in tho Islands, which
will take two weeks. After his return
to this country the secretary will make
a tour of Oregon, Washington, Wyoming
aud several other states in which the
government has reclamation projects on
band.
