State Prohibition Two Years Hence Is
Announced as Program of Anti-Saloon
- League and Only Bubjoct Boosted at
Good Citizenship Meeting at Rink.
"Painting Oregou White" was the
main theme discussed before a fair
sized audience assembled at the skating
rink Friday evening for the advertised
"good citizenship and b6oster" meet
ing. .Enforcement of the prohibition
law was advanced by those who spoke.
II. C. Garnett, presided as chairmau.
Most of the speakers were those ac
tive in tho prohibition movemeut, some
of them being ngitators for the anti
Saloon league, who have conducted cam
paigns in Klamath Josephine counties
aswell as in other states than Oregon.
Mr. Garnett stated that the newly
elected county officials had been in-,
vited -to attend and they were called
upon, but D. H. Miller was thelonly one
who was present. The chairman refut
ed the nssertion made thut Medford
taxpayers were not lenders in the pro
hibition campaign by introducing S.
L. Bennett, who lives outside the city.
Other speakers were J. E. llnre, and It.
T. Montgomery of Grants Pass, Ward
Mcllenry, J. K. Howard. Rev. F. C,
Williams and J. M. Sweeny., .
State prohibition two years hence was
announced as the league's program and
was the only act boosted during the eve

LAW SATS BANKS MUST PAY
INTEREST ON MONEY
WASHINGTON, .June C. Under the
terms of the new currency law passed
by congress in the closing hours of
the last session, bunks in which funds
of the government are Ueposited must
herenfter pay interest for tho use of
such funds. An exception is made in
the . ease of those favored banking as
sociations designated as "National de
positories," in which funds arc placed
strictly for the use of the governmenl
own expenses. There is outstanding
about $72,000,000 of government funds
on which interest must hereafter be
paid by banks, and by an odd coinci
dence the nationnl depositories are not
subject to the tax.
It was stated at the treasury depart
ment yesterday that not only would
the tax bo charged on all deposits of
government money loaned iri the future,
but that the government funds depos
ited in banks from the time the new
law became etToctive must bear interest.
The rate of interest chargeable is to
be not less than 1 per cent, nnd as
much tnoro as the secretary of the treas
ury may deem proper. For tho present,
however, the rate will bo 1 per cent per
annum,
In the south nnd west each year huge
sums of money are necessary to move
the crops, and the government funds
have frequently aided greatly in reliev
ing the situation. During tho recent
stringency there was a cry for govern
ment funds from the banks. Hereafter
tho bnnks must pay for money lent by
the government to move the crops. "
