FISH DIE BY THOUSANDS
IN IRRIGATING
SLAUGHTER
S NEEDLESS
Failure of Wardens to En
force the Law for Screens
Exterminating Finny
Tribe on Rogue River
Fish nre dying by the thousand in
nearly nil irrigating ditches of Hie
county. Tho law requires that screens
be placed in tho conduits to prevent
tho fish from leaving the mitin streams,
but no effort is made to enforce the
law. Tim fish warden dors nothing, and
ditch owners say they have not seen
or heard from him.
Unless something is dono, and done
at once, to stop the needless waste of
tho fiuny tribe, fishing on tho Rogue
river and its tributaries will soon be
come a thing of the past. To plant the
streams with young fih only to let
them perish in vast quantities in these
ditches through tho inefficiency and neg
ligouco of those paid to provent it is
a waste of money, and this negligence
is destroying one of the most valuable
assets of this community.
Same Story Prom All Over. '
From every section of the county
comes tho same story from Evans
creek, from Little Butte, from the
ditches along the Rogue and those along
tho Applegato. There are no screens
anywhoro, say returned fishermen, and
a large mess of fish can bo cnught in a
few minutes in any of the conduits,
not caught by rod and line, but scooped
out. The little fish descend these
streams, get eaught in tho shallow wa
ter and perish.
Tho Fish Lnkn diteh, the Slingcr
ditch, the ITanley ditch and many other
artificial waterways are lined with dead
fish. Young stelheads, cutthroats,
rainbow and brook trout perish togeth
er by the hundreds.
Upon Evans Creek.
A correspondent writes from Kvnns
creek as follows:
"A great many peoplo nre wonder
ing why there are no trout in the
streams. If they would just take a trip
up Evans ereek nnd look at. tin many
thousands of trout dead in the irriga
tion ditches and in the fields they Would
know whero they wero going. It seems
us though the fish warden has never
made a trip up Kvnns ereek. You can
get trout by the thousands in n few
minutes in these ditches. Not only that,
but the smell is something fearful,
where they havo been thrown by run
ning water on the grass. You ran see
them from two inches up to ten, and
yet no one says n word or reports the
samp to the warden. I uuderelnnd there
is no screen at either one of the dams I
on Kvans ereek." I
Charles flay and Harry Messier nre '
fish wardens here, but apparently iuae- I

CHAMPION GROUP OF

Secretary A. L. Hayes of the Cham

claims are in Siskiyou, California, in n
statement to the stockholders sent out
from Portland on May 29, shows that
the total receipts of the company from
May I.', 1907, to March II. IfKW, were
27,110.31, nearly all of which came ,
from the sale of stock. Of this amount
there is H.M left in bank nnd t-tfiJH.97
was spent for labor and supplies at the
mines. The rest went elsewhere.
The secretary givea a lot of other in- j
formation as to the conduct of the pom- ;

following paragraph:
"It is to ho deplored that at least
flrt per cent of the money paid in by'
.stockholders had not been expended at
the mines, for had it been we todny I
would have producing tiropertv, instead !
of nothing but debts nnd bankrupts
In this era of "high flnanceering" Ij
may be considered by some aa " irre-1
aponsible and nnreliablc' for having i
dared to irive facts to stockholders of I
the Champion Group Mining company."!
