A certified check for five (5) per
cent of the amount bid, in favor of tho
treasurer of tho city of Medford, is
herewith enclosed, which wo agree to
forfeit to the city of Medford if we
shall fail to execute the attached con
tract and furnish the reipiircd bond, to
be approved by the mayor and tho city
council, within ten days after being
notified of the acceptance of this pro-
posnl.

'specifications.
Material to Bp Furnished by the City.
The east-iron pipe, special castings,
hydrants, valves and valve boxes will
be furnished by the city of Medford,
delivered to the contractor in good con
dition at the railroad station in Med
ford. They shall bo hauled to tho work
and plated by tho contractor, and all
pipe, special castings, hydrants, valves
and valve boxes injured in handling
shall be replaced by and at tho expense
of the contractor.
Tools and Material to Be Furnished by
the Contractor.
The contractor shall furnish all the
necossary tools and nppliauocs for do
ing the work, and the city shall furnish
tho lead and oakum for the joints. The
lend shall be pure soft lead.
Construction.
The waterworks shall bo constructed
in ncocrdnneo with tho following s'ci
ficntions: Excavating.
The trench for the pipe shall be ex
cavated to lino and to the grade showu
on the profiles, and it shall be ouo foot
wider than the outsido diameter of the
pipe. Opposite the pipe joints the
trench shall bo excavated two feet wid
er than the outside diameter of the
pipe and six inches below grade for a
length of one and one-half feet, for the
bell holes. Any material takea out in
excess of the above stated dimensions
will not be paid for. Tho material
shall be deposited not loss thnn two
feet from the sido of tho trench. Ex
cavation and backfilling shall bo paid
for by tho cubic yard, measured in the
excavation. ,
Backfilling.
The materinl filled around and over
tho pipe for a depth of four inches
shall bo fino miiterial. The balance of
the trench shall be filled with scrapers
or shovels, and tho surplus material de
posited in a ridgo over the pipe to al
low for settling. On the streets that
are to hp paved this year the backfill
ing shall he sprinkled nnd thorouglily
tamped in four inch layers until coin
pact. On the other streets tho back
filling shall be thoroughly settled with
water. The trenches shall not bo back
filled until the pipe has been tested and
accepted.
LAYING CAST-IRON PIPE.
The pipe shall be laid with n bearing
the full length, the spigots tight against
tho bottom of the hubs and the innei
surface of the pipe even at the joint-.
Yarn gasgets shall be calked tightly
into tho hubs, the joints tilled ilush
with lead at one pouring ami the lead
thoroughly calked into the joint", until
they are water tight. The depth of
lead in the joints after calking shall
be not less than two inches. The in-

Distributing System.
Street mains, valves and hvdrants
slinll he put in as shown iu red on
the map of the city.
The necessary cast irou tecs, curves
and crosses shall bo put in for connect
ing the mains and hydrants and for the
proposed extensions shown on the map
iu dotted lines. The outlets for these
extensions shall be plugged with cast-
iron plugs, leaded in.
Hydrants shall bo sot ten feet from
the street main and four and one-half
feet deep. Tho hydrant connections
with tbo street mains shall bo four-
inch pipo of tho same kind ns thestront
mains.
Valves, witli east-iron vnlvo boxes,
shall be put in opposite tho block cor
ners whero saown on the map.
A stono of concrete block eighteen
inches square ami eight inches thick
shall bo put in back of each hydrant
nnd the special castings where there is
danger of the joints blowing oft".
The street mains shall bo laid twenty
feet from th.; property lines and to
tho grades shown op the profiles.
The prescut street mains that are to
be left in are shown on the map in green
These mains shall bo connected with
the new syBtem where connections are
marked on the map.
Testing.
Wheu the distributing system is
completed, the pipo shall be filled with
water nnd subjected to a pressuro of 100
pounds per square inch for not less
thnn twelvo hours without leaking nnd
until accepted by tho engineer; or, the
pipo Bystem may he tested in sections
in the same manner, if so ordered hy
tho engineer. The city will do t lie
pumping necessary to make these tests
without charge to the contractor. The
distributing system shall be made water
tight nnd nil defects made good by ami
nt the expense of tho contractor before
the work will be accepted by tho engi

companying these specifications, on file
in the oftice of the City Recorder of the
City of Medford, are as follows:

How Work Shall Be Done.
All work shall be done in a lirst-i-liiKS,
workmanlike manner, ncocrding
to tho plans and specifications and to
the acceptance of the engineer. The
work shall be done in the order direct
ed by the engineer.
Engineer.
Wherever t he word ' ' engineer ' is
used in these specifications, it refers
to the engineer employed by the city
of Medford to supervise the construc
tion of the waterworks.
AU Work and Material to Be Approved
by the Engineer.
All work aud material shall be to the
Kiitisfai-tion and nereptam-e of the en-J
gmeer. No material shall ho usen mini
it has been inspcctM nnd approved by
the engineer.
Competent Men to Bo Employed.
Competent men shall be employed to
dn the mechanical work, nnd if nny
man employed is incompetent, careless
or objected to by the engineer, he sh.ill
be discharged.
Bridges and Guards.
The contractor shall provide bridges
and guards ami rod lights at night nt
.ill road and street crossing during the
time the trenche are open.
The foregoing ordinance was panned
by the ?ity council this 2lst day of
April, l'.ins, by the following vote, to
