barn on the place he recently bought
of J. A. Wright and is painting the
boards and putting them up again. Won
der why he didn't paint them while
they were standing. He snys ho will
build a new house before long.
J. S. Straight has resigned his posi
tion as mail carrier, nnd C. Sargenut
has been appointed temporarily in bis
stead.
('. P. Carman, representing the Royal
Scroll, was hero the first of the week in
the interest of his company.
Mrs. John Shideler delivered butter
in Ashland Saturday last.
William J. Beardsley has sold his
place of eight ncres in Stringtown to a
Mr. Croy, a new eomer.
Henry Bailey has also sold his place
of 17 acres to a newcomer.
Professor A. J. Hanley of Central
Point spoke to a rcowded house here
Sunday evening at the Presbyterian
church. Mr. Hanley taught, school here
several years ago.
C. M. Roardman has returned from
the Del Rio ranch at Rock Point, where
he has been painting and pnperhanging.

and family, mother nnd brother, re
spectively, of K. 1j. Balcom of West
Seventh street, arrived here Friday
from Minnesota to make Medford their

K.'jl. Clarke, the pioneer wool buyer,
who had operated in Oregon for ninny
years in the interest of a San Francisco
firm, died nt Pendleton lately, from
acute pneumonia. He was a genial gen
tleman of the old school and had many
friends here as well as elsewhere. Wed
ding invitations were received by Ore
gon friends for the marriage of his
daughter in California shortly after his
dfstb.
A. P. Weiss was in our midst one day
this week.
Jesso Hamilton of Applegato spent
Friday afternoon in Medford on bus

R. V. Mnys, who died nt the resi
dence of his son, James Mays, near
Mrdford. on Wednesday, was a native
of Tennessee, where he was horn near
ly 75 rars ago. He was a good citizen
nn.i neighbor nnd highly respected by
alljfrhn knew him. Interment took
pldce in the Odd Fellows cemetery. Rev.

the authorities who are responsible. One
thing is patent, the road' districts are
too large and should be changed and
supervisors compelled to go over the
roads in early sprint; with a scraiier

aud leveler to smooth dowu and fill up
and not wait until summer and then
put or throw in a lot of dirt to make
more mud and deepr holes. Wake up.

SCHOOL NOTES.
Hobson has left Washington on his
lecturo tour nnd will be in Medford
Monday evening, May 4, at tho opera
house. Seats will go on sale Wednes ¬
day.
Applications for the entranco of pu
pils in school come in almost daily, it
seems- inadvisable to enter pupils in
some grades at this timo of the year,
since the pupils are beginning roviows
for the examinations, aud owing to the
crowded condition of Bcvcral rooms.
Kighth grade examinntinn occurs May
14 and IS.
All tho high school teachers who ap
plied were retained for next year. The
science position remnins to bo filled,
sinco Mr. Logan contemplates other
work next year.
There is a strong probability that a
teaehor of manunl training will b en
gaged to tako that work and the draw
ing next yenr.
