Contract Closed for Transfer of Half Spokane Real Estate Broker Says Med
Million Acres to Eastern Syndicate J ford Should Have Twenty Thousand
Land to Be Cut Up and Sold in Small ' People in Two Years Property-Own-
Tracts Extends Across End of State. 1 ers Should Build.
V
X contract ht been closed for th
transfer ami immediate colonization of
the la add of the Oregon Military Laud J
iiraut company, comprising 500,000
acres iu Southern Oregon. The deal was
consummated by H. A. Hunter, presi
dent of the land grant company. The
grant is taken over by the corporation,
to be known as the Oregon Valley Land
company of Kansas City, Mo. The con
sideration is about $1,51)0,000.
A complete plan of colonization has
been adopted, following tlio lines of the
purchasers in the disposition and set
tlement last year of the San Luis Valley
Land company's large holdings in Colo
rado. The negotiations between Presi
dent Hunter of the Oregon grant and
the eastern people have been under way
for nearly a year and its successful con
clusion means much for the southern
part of Oregon west of the ( 'ascade
mountains.
Open New Region.
The great tract held for so many
years by the Booth-Kelly company, and
later by the Hunter organization, has
never yet been offered to the public
and has remained practically a sealed
book to the people at large, although
it lias for a quarter of a century been
known as a region of vast development
possibilities. Since the last year's act
ive campaign of surveying by Harri
mnn railroad engineers through central
and southern Oregon the grant has eomc
into notice more than ever before. It
will be tapped by the Oregon Kastern
railway to be built by the Southern Pa
cific and the Oregon Short Line.
The grant has for several years boon
owned principally by H. A. Hunter and
r,ongressrn:ni Andrus of Minnesota. It
extends in n strip 12 miles wide from
1he summit of the Cascades to the
Snake river opposite Silver City, Idaho
The nortion involved in the transfer
just made begins at the east side of tho
Klamath Indian reservation and inc
ludes all the lands east of that divis
ion point.
From the day the grant was made by
congress in 1fi4 nothing has been done
to em-ourage settlement and develop
ment. The new owners propose immedi
ately to reverse this policy and will n
, eon rage settlement by the sab' of tho
hinds in small tracts.
MANY ENJOY MUSIC
AND DINNER AT NASH
More people enjoyed t he music and
table d'hote dinner at the Hotel Xash
Sunday evening than any evening this
season, and both the music and dinner
were worthy nf a city many times the
i.e of Medford. The program rendered
by the llnzelrigg orchestra was an un
iisually popular one. filled with tune
t ul melodies and the favorite received
o much applnuHe that encores were in
s rder.
Manager MeMahon of the Nash de
serves the greatest credit for these fciun
litiv evening gastroiiomicul and musical
treats, whieh are hemming quite a fea
;ure in the social life nf the commu
jiity. They are one of the best adver
tisements that Medford has. and both
otel guests and townsj pie are loud
jit their praises.
For a traveling man In find a hotel
rvico equal to that of the best eafes
f Portland or S:in Kranrism, with all
the m'l'niiipaiiiiiients, in a small city like
Medford is both a surprise and a
light, and the news that Medford

The subject. "A Uladsomo Easter Mes

concourse nf hearers.
The cTening exercises were also very

Fine Apples Are Too Fine.
Iterance of the financial situation in
the east, some packers of the finest
apples found that they could not obtain
their money within a reasonable time
and therefore larger supplies of this
quality were forced upon the Portland
market. At this time one firm has quite
liberal stocks of extra fancy Yellow
Xewtowns. which are rather slow sell
ers at $"J.f0 and a box. The trade
is taking mote to fancy grades because
of the very high price of the better
fruit. The fruit of this extra quality
is (Minted less todav than it could be
purchased at the start of the season;

Pa says a rose by any other
name would bo just as expen
sive back east this time of year.
I sometimes think ho pines for
the piney woods in old Penob
scot, Frappe County, Maine,
jvhero he was raised but that's
one thing yours truly never
yearns for. The good mountains
and the good old ocean and nice
old Oregon atmosphere- are good
enough for m-. Itnt it's all in
how you were raised. Pa likea
elam chowder and corn on the
cob, and harvest apples and a
lot of tliingi that a kid who
was born this side of tho snow
sheds has n 't had much chance
to get acquainted with. Those
who have lived on both sides of
this great country and lived
long enough to know what's
what can get nil those things
just as nice one place as an
other, if you know where to buy.
We've got elam chowder from
Boston that is just as nice as
any yon ever ate on the sand,
and lots of other things that
have that "Down East" taste.
