WOODMEN INITIATE
FIFTY NEW MEMBERS
Speeches Made by Head Consul Boaic
and Other National Officer Mayor
and Recorder Among Those Who Join
Lodge Banquet by Ladied.
The Woodmen of the World meeting
ut the Ki-dmen's uaU Monday mlit was
well attended. Speech were made by
lour of the leading Woodmen ot the
World of tho Paeitie jurisdiction, the
bpeakers being Head Consul 1. L Boak
of Denver, T. Clinton Veale, head ad
visor, of Pasadena, Cal.; John I'atti
bon, bead manager, of Colfax, Wash.,
and I K. Snodgrass, head- banker, of
ugene, Or,
The first speaker on the program was
Hon. B. F. Alulkey of Jacksonville. Mr.
Mulkey's address was very entertain
ing as'well as logical. After the speak

Perry's Recital.
BY ED ANDREWS.
The entertainment of last night by
KdwanI Baxter Perry was a complete
Kucecss. both from uu artistic bs well
as a financial standpoint. The program
consisted of well-known numbers by
home, of the best composers for piauo,
preceded by an explanatory talk on the
authors and their compositions, which
n.aile tho entertainment instructive as
well as entertaining. Mr. Perry's en
tertainment appeals rather to the stu
dent of music t hau to the general play
goer, as it is strictly on the classic or
der, and it was gra ifying to see so
large an attendance at Medford ' first
a'tempt at high music art.
Mr. Perry tyay be cia-sed with mod
ety among the fi iv givat piani-i of
this country, and in some ivjpivts h: is
well in tin1 fore front. For instancr, a
ii player of melodies, he take t'irt
place among the great artist-. Per
iiaps he larks somewhat in magnetic
lire. Mis playing is rather of the scholar
'!iau the wilil abandon nf Ins fellow
artists. Mis interpretation of the mel
ancholy moods of Schumann and the
weird fancies of ( 'liopin are perhaps
his best. Ilis tireig number was hardly
a 1'iir specimen of that great author's
works. ' I.ieberstraum ' ' and "The
Aeolian. ' ' his own composition, were
D-rhaps the most cnjovable numbers
ef i he- program. While Liszt is the best
known by his transcriptions, yet his
original compositions are by far his
most meritorious works.
M r. Perry, as a composer, like all
'her great performers, shows the influ
r are of the works I hey have studied,
perhaps to the detriment of their orig
iualitv. but take it for all ami in all.
the entertainment was n most delightful
.tie, and is a step in the right direction
toward the cultivation of higher art in
fedford.
Hobsou Is Delayed.
Holders of Lyceum tickets ami others
interested will note that Richmond !'
f.Kbson will nut be abb- to appear on
April 21. as announced, owing to late
adjournment of congress. The date will
he announced later.
May Festival Coming.
On May 1 the pupils of the city
schools under the training of Miss Wil
son, supervisor of music, will present
t he I iea it t i f u I ca n t a t a . "Da v id . t he
Shepherd Boy.' There will be a chorus
nf .".lift voices, mainly pupils of the
schools. Some uf the leading parts are
taken by local tah-nt nut-dde tho schools,
full announcement of which will be
made later. The characters will be in
."-Minie. using many Thar were ued
for the Mikado. This entertainment
will be given at the Opera House. Med
fnrd. Friday evening. May 1, at S:0.
Admission. "il and 7." cents.
ASHLAND FRUIT PROSPECTS
SAID TO BE THE FINEST
Fruit prospects in the Ashland dis
trict are reported never to have been
better at this season of the year. The
peach orchards are gay in their pink
blooms now, and growers report that
there will have to be big thinnings un
less Jack Frost should yet take a hand
and do the work. All other fruit crops
have likewise favorable reports, and
growers are in good spirits over the
seuou' prospect.
ASHLAND HAS SURPLUS
IN ITS WATER FUND
Ashland has a surplus of $10,000 or
more in its water fund, and the sur
plus is steadily growing from the re
ceipts for water rents, which amount to
as high as $1500 per month during the
year. The council has decided to util
ize this surplus, which belongs to a
sinking fund for the redemption of wa
ter bonds, in the purchase of city im
provement bonds, which private par
ties have been buying up, as they were
offered at a premium. By this means
the city's idle funds will bo made to
earn a revenue.
