The Xormal Athletic club had adopt
ed the new constitution and by-laws of
t he association, thereby becoming a
member.
The league is governed by strict
scholarship rules, no one being allowed
to enter a contest who has not a good
standing in all branches pursued.
The object of the league is to take
charge of all school athletic and to plan
for the champion teams to meet the
league of the northern part of the state,
which includes schools north of Eugene.

CRUDE PETROLEUM FOUND
IN WELL NEAR BANDON
Crude petroleum in what promises to
be good qua nl it ies has been found in
the Coos Hay country, about -It' miles
from Bandon, according to It. P. frit
tendeu of Marsh field, who is now in
Portland making arrangements to ship
a load of machinery to the scene to
develop tbe properties, says the .lour
unl.
Mr. Crittenden is managing the busi
ness near Ibtudon and is represent ing
a group of men, some of them of Port
land, who have put their money into
the prospei't.
According to the story of Mr. Crit
tenden, the company has struck oil in
their proseet well after having gmie
down 530 feet. The flow was smh as
to come to the surface of the ground
and proves to be nil of good quality.
The company hack of the property has
a lease on -10,000 acres of land in the'
vicinity and is confident of being able
to open up an oil region of magnitude.
Eastern experts who have examined the
property say the nil ami the manner of
fiuding it give color to the assumption
that it can be found in paying quan
tities by further development work.
Mr. Crittended will ship a large
amount of machinery for Rindon on the
Alliance, which sails on Satunlav next.

Grades to Be Established Hereafter

Whereas, there was submitted to the
voters of the City of Medfonl, -Oregon,
at a special election held for that
purpose on April .'I. 1!MS( a proposed
amendment to Section 7- of the City
Charter of said City of Medford. and
Whereas, on the said ;id day of April,

canvass the votes given for and
against the said amendment ; and
Whereas, it was ascertained and de
termined upon such canvass that there
were iltiS votes cast for and 2'2 votes
cast against the said amendment, and
that said amendment received an af
firuiat ivo majority of t he total num
ber of effective votes cast thereon and
entitled to be counted under t be pro
visions of the law;
Now, therefore, I, H. J. Trowbridge,
as acting mayor of t be City of Med
ford, Oregon, in the absence of the
mayor from t he city, i u obed ience t o
and by virtue of the power and an
thority vested in me by law, do hereby
make ami issue this proclamation to
the people of the City of Medford, and
do announce and declare that the whole
number of votes cast, in the city of
Medford at said idee t ion, for and
against the said a mend men t. was as
hereinbefore stated, and that the said
amendment received the affirmative
majority of the total number of votes
cast thereon ami entitled to be counted
under tbe provisions of law, and that
said nmendmeut shall be and is in full

all amendments thereof, and to incur

and shall issue warrants and bonds as
provided in this subdivision for such
