Tlic serious results in the form of
' ' Bordeaux injury, ' ' which often fol
low :iilic:it'u.ns of Bordeaux mixture
render it ittmost imperii) ive that some
means he found of reducing this in
jury, or that some spray ho discovered
which may he used as a suhstitute: for
Bordeaux.
For t ho past t wo or three years I
have (d)servod, after winter spraying
apple and pear lreeswilh lime-sulphur
solutions, for San .lose scale, that the
fruit upon the sprayed trees was less
' ' scabby ' ' than t hat upon unsprayed
trees. Tpon two different occusiona
this winter application was delayed un
t il 1 he blossoms were about to open
and while the spray was applied at the
full strength did considerable injury at
the. time, its decidedly beneficial of
fee 4s were noticeable when the fruit
was' gathered. However, th generally

Substitute for Bordeaux.
Nevertheless, these observations mi
rhled to me the probability thatl lino
sulphur solution might be used -h a
fiibslitute for Iturdenux mixture for
Siiiumer applications, and during the
pist yoar 1 have so ns-d it upon v:ri
inis plants and for various purposes.
It is not proposed at this time to go
at all into detail regarding these ex
periments. I wisli only to call atten
tion to some of the results obtained
which show conclusively that lime-sulphur
solutions may bo used as n sum
mer spray without injury to foliage and
also point strongly to the probability
that by its use apple scab may be ef
fectually controlled without danger of
spray injury to the fruit.
Sufficient work lias not been done to
justifv the statement that lime sulphur
is equal to Bordeaux as a preventive of
this disease, but the results nf the sin
gle season's work point so strongly to
this conclusion that 1 feel justified in
calling attention to them, that growers'
who have suffered loss from Bordeaux
injury, and others who are interested,
may make comparative lests of the two
spravs the coming season.
Standardizing the Spray.
In carrying out the work the past
season it became necessary first of all
to determine how strong a solution
could be used without injury In the
foliage. This, again, made it necessary
to adopt some melliod of "standardiz
ing ' the spray. A ft or considerable
work we adopted what may be termed j
1 he ' ' stock solution met h of pre
paring tlie spray and adopted as a
standard for the work a "stock seda
tion' having a specific gravity of 1.27.
Tor determining the specific gravity of
,th solution while at work in the field j
we have found the specific gravity hy-1
dronieter a very convenient instrument.
It is cheap, simple and convenient and;
I would recommend every grower who
expects to iho lime sulpliur a a sum j
nier spray to obtain one. j
This solution, similar 1 the II. x. .

FIRST: T.iiy 20 acres of the best land in the valley.
It is worth and will pay 8 per cent on $-") per aero in
its present condition. It is on the market lor the last
time at 200 per acre. The owner absolutely guaran
tees this.
SECOND: Sell it for .$2."0 per acre inside of six
months, and in the meantime take the crop of alfalfa
which will lie worth $400. It is a good "seller," as it
has 8 acres of Yellow Xewtowns and is close to school
and town. " Free" soil.
