rowly escaped dentil or serious injury
at liis home at mi early hour this morn
ing through the explosion of a dyna
mite bomb placed near his bed on the
outer porti'h iu which he was sleeping,
as was his euslom. Wells was hurled
wiih debris many feet from tho wrecked
house, I he side of which was torn com
pleti-.lv out. Hardly a stick of his bod
remained. The house has been guarded
against sueh an attempt by patrols ami
electric lights.
General Wells is manager of the

home, where the explosion occurred, lo

in town this morning, liis head band
aged, but otherwise apparently none the
worse for his experience. One suspect
was arrested and held pending the in
' yesligation. The entire city nnd coun
V police forces are working on the
ease. "More arrests are expected today.
Wells himself telephoned the news of
the explosion to the authorities and
soon the neighborhood was scoured.
There is no trace of the dynamiters.
The bomb or dynamite had evidently
t been placed under liis bed some time
yesterday and set off by clockwork or
a time fuse, but no trace of the ma
chinery was found.
General Wells ' predecessor as man

" 'ollins, an Hiiglishmuu, was shot to
death several years ago. Stove Adams,
the alleged accomplice of TTarry Oreh
aid, the murderer of ex Governor Steu
nenberg iu Idaho, is now in jail at Tel
luride awaiting trial fur that crime.
Wells was alone in tho house last
night, lie sleep on his porch the most
of the year.

Oliver Jones, the farmer from near
Jacksonville, has purchased a tract of

nut small fruits. Mr. Jones is an old
settler iu the valley.
Mrs. J. J, Cooko of St. Paul, Or.,
died Thursday at her home. She has
relatives and formerly lived in Med
ford.

Nomination
for County Judge Against
Dunn -Perkins Refuses
to Become Candidate.
Captain M. F. Kggleston of Ashland
today filed notice with tho county
clerk of becoming a candidate for the
republican nomination for the office of
county judge. Petitions in liis bohalf
are being circulated today.
Captain Fgglrsiton has become a can
lidato only after having received re
quests from republicans iu all parts
of the county asking him to enter tho
rart against Judge G. W. Ibinn, tho
incumbent. The horizontal raise of as
sessmetits (ill 2 -3 per cent, (he irregular
ity of present assessments and the fail
ure of present officials to have county
accounts exported have created a de
mand iu republican ranks for a chance,
and Captain Kggleston is put forth by
those republicans who object to the
present administration. Jlo is city re
corder in his home town and a man of
excellent abilities.

for the nomination and is making an
active canvass. Ho reports that there

just issued by tho railroad commission
shows that in February five persons

Wedded at Ashland.
Wednesday evening, March 2.1, at 8
o'clock at the homo of the bride on
Fourth street, Mrs. Kiln, H. Burns and
Mrnest R. 1 1. Crouton, attended by Mr.
and Mrs. Coltrell, to the wedding march
played by Mrs. Green, entered the par
lor and were united in marriage through
the ben tit if til ring ceremony by Rev.
Kdward r Green. The ceremony ended,
an elaborate supper was served for the
friends and guests. Addresses of con
gratulation led by Mayor and Mrs.
Loomis added joyfulness to tho occasion.
The house had been decorated in ferns

Among the new cases filed in tin
circuit court in that of S. L. Randry
vs. Sou t hern Pacific company, an ac
tion to recover toOOO damages on ac
count of injuries received by tin over
turning of a flatcar which plaintiff was
loading with lumber. Plaintiff tit the
time was in the employ of the Condor
Water A Power company nt Tolo nnd
was loading a flat car, which the Con
dor Water & Power company had hired
f rom defendant, with lumber. While
plaintiff was on the car it overturned
in Hitch a manner as to cause the plain
tiff to be permanently injured. The
complaint alleges that the overturning
of the car wan caused by tho broken
condition of the undeminiiiiigs of the
car and that th defenSirit in to blame
for n0 injuries on account of having
furnished a htidien car to the employers
of plaintiff. v

ON TOUR OF INSPECTION
.1. I. Wilson, deputy fish warden for
this district, has been doing some in
spection in this section during tho past
three or four days. Ho has put up
indices warning people against fishing
at the Golden Drift dam. tfe informs
us the law prohibiting fishing within
000 feet of the dam will bo rigorously
enforced, tho penalty of which is $o0
to 500. Something will also bo done
with the old Water & Light company's
ilam, just below tho Grant's Pass
bridge, though this dnm is not now any
serious impediment to the passage of
fish.

Two Killed and Several
Injured at Meeting of
Unemployed-i Did It
Because a Cop Beat Me

NKW YORK, Hn roll 28, Two men
were killed and a number of persons
injured this afternoon when what had
been a fairly peaceable meeting of the
unemployed, developed into an anar
chistic demonstration, and a bomb was
thrown aud exploded. A crowd, num
bering probably 10,000, had gathered
in Cuiou square to take part in tho
meeting, Many women wero in tho
gathering, and several speakers of lo
cal prominence had beeu announced to
mako addresses, A forco of 1.10 police
men, most of t hem mounted, were on
duty.
As tho lug crowd assembled, it, wits
not iced that there wero numerous red
flags, and that a number of persons
woro red hats. At soiuo Higns of dis
order the police started to disperse
those who were responsible. Little or
no resistance was offered, and tho
square almost cleared of the throng,
when one man engaged iu tho demon
stration rushed swiftly into the square
and threw a bomb, which landed near
Union Square fountain, aud in tho roar
of which a squad of police were sta
tioned, . ,
There was a cloud of smoke, a loud
report and a number of persons wero
seen to fall. Tho policy reported two
killed and a number injured. Tho
crowd, including many sightseers, were
panic-stricken.
I. Silverstein, .'10 years old, nccused
by the. police of having thrown the
bomb, is himself fatally injured. Tho
other dead man is Krwin ltasskv. Manv
arrests followed.
Silverstein was nlivo when , taken to
the hospital, but was literally torn to
pieces and it is improbablo that; ho will
survivo. He declared: "I did it no
mine a cop beat me up."
