"The Burgomaster" filled the opera
house to its capacity, the record re- j
ceipts of the season, which emphasized
the fact that a new theater in Med-1
ford is a "consummation devoutly to
be wished. ' ' Eashion was out in its
finest feathers, and a goodly rcpresen-1
tation from the surrounding towns was
there. Th company was an excellent j
one, the play beautifully staged and!
prettily costumed. j
As to the play itself, the excellence j
of the actors has made it a good one,
and not the author of the book. While;
there are a few eatcliy numbers in the i
music uud perhaps as a whole it might
be considered popular, yet, compared -with
the compositions of Arthur Sulli- i
van, Audrun, Locoq uud Planquctte, our i
present composers, like Hamlet's crab,!
huve been crawling backward.
When "Pinafore" opened a field in j
America for comic opera there was but;
little known about stagecraft, and the,
drilling and training of choruses in
bright and picturesque action. If some-1
on' would write nu opera with the inu-
sicnl merit of "Chimes of Normandy.";
(iirofle" or "Pinafore," and give it 1
to our modern stage manager to pro
duce we would indeed see a perform-
ance worth while. They say the "Mer-j
ry Widow" Is up to this mark, and if,
we get a new opera house, Manager
Haaclrigg promises to open with this'
great production. Let us boost. j
Is First-Class ComedUui.
But I am digressing. We munt talk j
a little of the actors. The central fig-,
ure nf the play is the burgomaster, who
hail a very able exponent in (lus Weiu-
burg. Mr. Weinburg is a comedian that j
has passed the point of trying to be'
funny. He is funny, and has really I
made bis part in the play; the author j
J gave him the skeleton and lot has i
clothed it in a humorous manner. In a i
word, he may be truthfully ranked
i among the few tirsiclass comedians, and j
I their number is not too many. True
comedy is a serious business. ' Mr. j
Weinburg comprehends the gravity of !
the situation. ,
Leo Kendal as Doodle Von Kull was
the funny running mate. He is a good ;
comedian, who knows just how far to'
go and where the thaw the Hue. He I
is not of the over ambitions kind that ,
try to neutralize tho work of others.
Miiss Kuth White was the Willie As-
torbilt of the play. She succeeds in a i
ery difficult effort of showing worn-j
a nly modesty in male at tire. She was
sweet ami dainty. She speaks her lines
in scholarly fashion. Her pronuncia
tion is charming. She is an excellent
actress and is the possessor of a sweet
soprano nice. She phrases her music
with the best tif taste.
Play ii Taking One. 1
Marie tirntidpre, the girl from Chi-,1
cago, is a very taking little singer and j
actress; in fact, to specially mention ;
each one of the east Would be only J
,iittice, for each play ml their part cx
tiemely well. The choru girls are all j
voting and really pretty, in fact it was:
the best balance I chorus that Medford!
has seen. The prcttv ensemble was not
mailed by the lean girl "who is send-
nig niMiiey home to her mother to sup- '
poi t t wo children.
Taken as a whole, the show bears the'
in titipolitan stamp, and as long as we
can g' t sm-h companies. Medford will
