Praise for Jubilee Singers.
BY KB AXIHiKWS.
Williams' Jubilee company, who ap
Mared at the upera house Saturday
night nnd gave a sacred program Sun
day night were a pleasant suiie to
the music lovers of Medford. It is too
bad that good companies should suiter
from the shortcomings of inferior com
panies that precede them, but it is a
penalty which true art often has to
pay. The so-called jubilee singers that
have appeared here this winter have
been a doleful attempt at music and
have not been considered wort hy The
Tribune's notice; lu( the eight talent
ed siugers of last night rank among
the first of like companies, white or
colored.
Their program is chiefly of the popu
lar style, with enough of the classic
to make it worth while for the lovers
of high art. The voices are perfectly
balanced in their quartet work and
their cresceiulos and diminuendos are
beyond the perfection that any director
might hope to obtain. True musicians
who sing together for a long time ar
rive at a unity of sympathy by sub
merging individuality and striving for
A harmonious result which individual
ambition would never reach, and this
is perhaps the reason we so seldom hear
n perfect quartet. These singers di
minish to a whisper ami successful Iv
imitute the moaning of the wind.
Tt would be unfair to single out any
member for special praise, yet there
are singers among them who closely bor
der greatness, but it is as a whole
that you think of this company. Man
ager Ha7.elrigg should book this troupe
for a return engagement next season,
for they have given us a taste of their
quality and their melodious voices that
will be a pleasant memory.
FORMER JACKSON COUNTY
WOMAN IN LEGAL TANGLE
Susan E. Anderson is seeking the aid
of the circuit court in untangling a
matrimoninl inix-up in which she has
played n prominent part. According
to her own account of it. ns contained
in the complaint she has filed, she was
married to Fred Kleinhnmmer, in Linn
county. May 2. 18SB. but they were
mismnted nnd the courts of that coun
ty dissolvedtlie knot which made them
husband and wifo, July fi, 1893, nnd on
that very -same day she accepted I he
hand and heart of Xoah V. Leabo and
they were at once mnrried nt Albany.
She lived with this mnn until the year
1807, when to her great astonishment
she ascertained that her marriage to
this man was illegal, inasmuch as the
Oregon state laws provided that no di
vorced parties could remarry within n
period of six months after the court
has separated them. And this was news
to her husband, too, and tnking ad
vnntage of the situation, he forthwith
'skipped out" nnd she says she has
never seen him since that time, but af
terwards she says one of his brothers
informed her that the mnn was dead.
Acting upon this bit of information,
she again entered the matrimoninl
state, this time, becoming the wife of
Alfred Anderson, to whom she was
married March 18, 1001, nt Jackson
ville. Two children were born to them.
But afterwards this husband died nnd
now she .seeks to have the court deelare
her marriage to Leabo null and void,
giving her the complete charge of the
two children and nllowlrg her nnd said
children to assume the surname of An
derson.
GETS JAIL SENTENCE
FOR CARRYING PISTOL
James flrihble, surcharged with Ash
land blind pig whisky, flourished pis
tol and ns a consequence was sent to
the count v iail for ten days by re
corder Kggleston. ' Chief of Police
Thornton took him to Jack-mn ville.
The habit of carrying concealed
weapons is altogether Ion common, nnd
there are many others who should be
punished severely therefor.

I Koifiie Hiver valley. Tiie valley Las an
area of approximately l-lilO sqmtr-.-miles
and is about half as large us
the statu of Hclnwaro or Khode Island.
The Kogue b'iver valley is one of
the moat prolific in the entire country,
and produces apples, pears, peaches,
grapes and other fruits with extraordi
nary success. During liu au orchard
near Medford shipped a carload of
pears to Xow York City, for which the
gross price of $4022.80 was paid. This
is the fresh fruit car record of the
world and is equivalent to the remark
able price of 17 cents per pound for
fresh fruit at wholesale. The fruit
which made this remarkable record was
lu Cornice pears. The best pre ious
record of frc-di fruit was also made by
Medford (in limit) when :tl.-o was
id for a carload of the same fruit.
The i-ords made in the Rogue River
valley iu orchards adjacent to Med
ford during 1 HOT are so wonderful as
to surpass belief. Sixteen and one halt'
acres of Winter Xellis pears produced
i-lO.tioo net f. o. b. Medford. Pifty-five
trees of Yellow XVwtown Pippins pro
dneed 8 la boxes of fruit, which, in
spite of the financial panic iu London,
panned out 17 1 l.."it net. These trees
grew on less than one acre. The three-j
acre orchard from which this fruit was ;
taken has produced an average amount j
of ."no net per year for the last eight
yeais. One hundred and fifty-two Yel
low Xewtown Pippin trees produced iu
1007. $312a f. o. b. Medford. These
trees grew on three acres. From eight
acres near Medford 0000 boxes of New
town Pippin apples were marketed in
1!""7, netting $2000 nu acre f. o. b. the
orchard. For the past seven years this
orchard has netted $701 per acre aver
age. Apple and Pear Returns.
Seven acres of Hart let t. pears near
Medford iu 0B7 grossed $2200 per acre.
A young Bart let t pear orchard of 30
acres of S-yenr-old trees netted :100!
per acre.
Twenty Winter Xellis pear trees net
ted $0dito. These figures show I lie won
d erf id profit made iu l!07 for apple
and pen r orchards about Medford a
profit exceeding $l(Hin per acre iu many
cases.
Although the record for 1000 does
not show such -wonderful returns, tin
figures are, ne vert heless. exceed in glv
large. Three fonrl lis of uu acre of
Spit .en bergs produced ."87 boxi-s ill
nine, which brought $1171. Kour acres
of Spit .eiibergs brought $2113. Twenty
two acres of pears in 10 Ml produced
