AMERICAN TREES IN
FOREIGN LAND FORESTS
United States Trees Tlirivo Well in
New Zealand, as Do Thoso of Europe
and Australia Rapid Changes Tak
ing Place in Animal Life in islands.
Trees from the United States, Kurope
mid Australia are being systematically
introduced into the nativo forests of
New Zealand. In the climate of that
country trees from almost anywhere
will thrive, ami this fad is taken ad
vantage id' lo plant the most profitable
species. Kleveu tn ill ion larches, oaks,
spruces, loitIas firm and eucalyptus
have been set in plantations, and vast
numbers of sondliiipr aro coming on in
nurseries. These are rapidly Rowing
spec it which also make exeelh-ul Inn
her.
Natives Grow Too Slowly.
The reason given for introducing for
eign t t ees is t hat I ho nat i e t i ces of
New Zealand are loo slow in gn.vth.
S e of Iheiu, as the kauri pine, grow
to gigantic sie ami produce excellent
t iinl.er. but it takes from 'Jon years
up lo do so. Successful forestry ib
mauds .nicker r. turns.
More lapld changes in animal and
vegetable life aie taking place in New
Zealand t han a I aunt anywhere else in
the woild. The native Polynesian race
is rapidly disappearing before the Ku
ropean. The wild animals, native to the
islands, amount to little in the contest
with animals brought in, many of whicli
now run wild. The streams are full of
American and Murop.an trout. which
grow to enormous size. The very for
.sis are to be replaced, tree by tree. Im
planting foreign species as the native
woods di-appear.
