ON THE ROGUE RIVER
I This Valley Described as "Villa Land,"
"the" Ideal Home for Artists, Poets
and Lovers of the Beautiful, as the
I Valley of Italy Have Been.

are here, with variety of life

never; and nowhere else jierhnps
on this sphere is there to he found a
sect ion of country having, within a
radius of an hundred miles, sueh vari
ous pros poet and sueh eidor scheme.
Here rich is the soil and teniperutt
is the clime. Such storm only as would
jrivc emphasis to calm is lit re in evi
dence, but to elarify atmospheres that
shake never with violence t In forests,
nor twist into angular shape I he ruin
ous trees, nor chills with Arctic hreath
the Mood 'of men.
Here lies t hat delect i bio common
wealth which, year by ymr since the
pioneers first saw it from the heights,
hath gained renowned as beiny worth
ily placed in an altitude between the
sea and the sun.
Resources of the Rogue.
TCojjue valley some time njjo passed
that period in its histiry when its ntiine
became a synonin of loveliness and fer
tility it lias now entered upon an em
of fact it ion; its loveliness has been
noted, its yraudeur depicted and its
fertility wholly proven ami chronicled.

are but few parts of the world where
may be found sections so favorable in
the matter of climate, sen! and physical

some; nor the sylven dales of Shiraz.

Is Future Home of Artists.
The future homo of artists, tno, is
liere where the wonder tints of summer
mere autumn's splendor. Xo other
where is to be seen such delicate morn
iny of color-tints in sunset's splendor.
No other where is to he seen such inim
itable cloud arrangement, such rainbow
arches spanning such emerald widths,
sueh mists hung purple on the rimming!
hills.
To stand upon an eminence- east of
Med ford and witness a summer storm
swing over Table Ruck; to behold the
lurid gh-am of shafts of falling rain,
shot through and through with gleams :
of orange light, which downward slant
like a million cloud shut arrows; as
though lost tribes had now recurred
upon t heir hunt ing ground ' 'the hat
tie tumult of forgollen days," ere they
had melted away in the woo of wilder
ness war; to behold the further detail

having one's art is) passion stirred to

sible. An Ideal Villa Land.
Why have 1 soon fit to call this Villa:
Iand .' Hi-cause such is to bo its sure
destiny. And why not? What other
immediate section of country offers
such opporl unity for indoor-outdoor
life? Sueh opportunity for summer
homes with pergola arrangement with
camping ground by river and niounlatn
stream, where are also mineral springs
and pine tree scents but n half d:iv s
journey from one's door.
As a factor of moment the time is
near at hand when the villa lif will
predominate hen- in this valley.
Neither is the time 'far distant when
Rogue river, in the matter of its being
lined upon ouch side with mansions and
grounds where shall abide men and ,
women who place large emphasis or
ornate finish and elegant appointment,;
will become the Hudson of Southern;
Oregon. Tame this seemed apparent Hi
years ago; it is no less apparent today.1
Would not the river atom the fact
of soil and climate aside with its
graceful curves, its majestic sweep and
its ample width, be of sufficient war !

never have seen a river with a more
majestic sweep than such as is fully in
evidence as one looks from Itybee
bridge towards Table Rock. Vrtninly
