OENIUS OF JACKSONVILLE:
A TANGLEFOOT TALE
Miles Overholt, editor of the Jack
sonville Post and of "Tanglefoot,"
Southern Oregon's monthly journal of
philosophy, who has made a unme nnd
fame chiefly through the latter period
ical, is contemplating seeking a new
field for the exploitation of his ideas
and genius. As his removal from .lack
son county would be an irreparable loss
to journalism of this state, a Tribune
reporter sought to find the cause. Mr.
Ovorholt. was inclined to be reticent
aa to his reasons. When pressed for
an nnswer he stated frankly that he
was delighted with Jackson county, its
climate and people.
"Have you confidence on the future
of this country 1" he was asked.
"Oh, yes, unbounded faith in the fu
ture, nnd the immediate future, of
this county. Why, (lie future is here
now," he exclaimed. "1 mean the
great development of this county has
fairly begun and will not end till you
havo 100,00(1 acres in pear and apple
orchards, and in ten years the annual
shipments of fruit will amount to .10,
000 cars. Have yon thought of what
that means? With 20 cars to a train
it means 2500 trains a day. The ship
ping season will last about five months
500 trains a month, Hi a day. If
each car brings but $oon, it. means an
income of r'O.OOii.ooo a year. In 20
years $1,000,000,000. It is easy to un
derstnnd where the financial center of
the world will be at that time.
"Yes." continued the genius, "with
that glorious prospect, I could even hope
to own an auto. Think of it!" and In
fxlrlv shouted, "an auto for an editor
of the Post. You can imagine my re
grot at being compelled In separate my
self from such a hope, 'llinc iliac Inch
rvmae '. ' '
"But, Mr. Overholt. why will yon
leave the people who cleave unto you
like tanglefoot to its victims r
"Very good, I'll borrow that, if you
plense, as T do most of my humor. Hut
that's our secret."
"Yes. Mr. Ovorholt. but what can
the Tribune tell the public is the rea
mil of your departure that will leave
thousands mourning and wondering?"
"Well, I was coming to that. To be
frank with you. candor and honesty
require me to seek a more tropica!
clime. I can no longer continue in that
class called by our noble president, na
turo-fakirs. 1 must emancipate myself
get rid of that odium."
The tears fell thick and fast were
almost sticky, because so thick and
fast. When he had recovered, the re
porter said:
"Please. Miles, make it plain."
"Mr hov." he whispered huskily, "it
it simply flies" the reporter started
for the door. "Come back, he cried.
"I haven't got 'cm: honest, I haven't
4Vnr me to the end. I demand it'"

door.

put up with a measly printed imitation
instead of the genuine corpse of a de
censed ' musca domeatica,' nnd as a re
sult the readers of Tanglefoot have re
volted, and of tho last issue, 2H,.TT4
copies have been returned by followers
of our chief executive, who demand the
real thing. You might suggest building
a cold-storage plant, but to bo frank,
tho demand for Tanglefoot has grown
so great that in a country where the
'musca' cannot live and increase the
whole year, the necessary adornmonts
tor the title page cannot bo procured."
At this point Mr. Overholt received
the following telegram:
"Yuma, Ariz., March 4, 1!.
Miles Overholt, Jacksonville, Or.:
"Come at once. Chainlier of com
merce guarantees 10.000.tHIO flies a
month. If not sufficient caa import
from Mexico. SKCKKTARY."
'That settles it with me," snid
Miles. "Where duty calls, there I must
Ui. But how sad. how sad and how self-
h iu tne to sacrifice those millions of
little flies ami the millions unborn to
sustain my budding genius "
Here Mr. Overholt was so overcome
that th, reporter, unwilling to longer
lacerate his feelings, gently led him to
the nearest refreshment parlor nnd
aved his life for the world and the
new style (insect ivera) literature.
