A DRUBBING IN PROSPECT.
The )r. i"ti i.i n. busy in it h batlli!
ngainKt poiiiilar govcriiinent, remarks:
"The Oregtiiiinn will take no more
ilruMiingH in the name of tile Kcpub
lienn pnrly not for a while, anyhow,
you may depend. Of vicarious imeri
fire it hu-4 had enough."
Vet the Orogoiiiun will take another
drubbing, us bad as tiny in its history.
and that at the next election, and take
it in the name of the Kepublieau party,
prohahly. Its efforts to defeat iiopu
lar election of United Htates senators,
to discredit Statement No. 1, the direct
p'iinaiy and the initiative anil refer
endum will result disastrously for it
self, and for the party.
The Oregonian has the happy faculty
of getting on flic wrong side of popu
lar isHiies. This explains its previous
"drubbings." The people of Oregon are
not going to surrender their rights to
the reactionaries, nnd restore the reign
of corporate corruption, even at the be
hest of Hie Oregonian.
I''or years the Oregoninn has favored
the popular election of senators, yet
when popular election is put into prac
tice it prepares itself for a "drubbing"
nt the hands of the people by favoring
a rcstornti f II , regime of po
litical rotleuess.
