TO BUILD

C MINE
A harmless deck of playing eanls
has caused a terrible commotion in pub
lic school circles of Mitlfunl this week.
Fuur vouths who had the cards in their
possession were expelled. Their fath
ers took the matter up before tin
school board, which, after two days
weighty deliberation, reinstated the stu
dents and forced .Superintendent Signs
to publicly apologi to the offending
students. The climax came this unou
when Professor Signs tendered his res
ignation. Who the Boys Were.
The boys were Willis Denton, Everett
Corey, Walter and Emerson Merrick, the
two latter the sons of Councilman F.
K. Merrick. Their ages run from l.'l
t and nil are students in the eighth
grade at the North school. The trouble
started last Tuesday noon when Profes
sor Shirley found the boys toying with
, a deck of cards during the noon hour.
The cards belonged to Allen Denton,
who was dealing them out to the other
i. boys, though no game was being played.
Having n deck of playing cards was
-evidently a serious offense in the eyes
, of the principal, who summoned the
boys upon the carpet to meet Superin
tendent Signs, who was summoned from
I' the high school. The superintendent ex
pelled the Denton youth for this and
next week. Tho other three boys were 1
expelled for this week. I

from Los Angeles
with Financial Back
ins; for line to Fuel Pit
H. E. Doan has returned from Los
Angeles, where he went to enlist finan
cial aid and will now proceed to build
a railroad from the Medford coal mine
into Med ford. Mr. Doan is not. cer
tain as to just when work will be com
meiiced, nor the exact route, but says
that, the road will be built during this
spring and summer. Mr. Doan is vice
president, and manager of the coal com
puny.
Kngineers will begin to locate the
route just as soon as tho weather will
permit. Mr. Doan nhns to havo the
road in operation on or before June 1,
at whic htime the mine can produce K))
or more tons of coal per day.
The capacity of the mine will be in
creased until it will be one of the larg
est producers on the coast, and tho pay
roll will be one of Med ford's greatest
drawing cards.

WORD CITY SCHOOLS
Action Supposed to be due to Failure of
School Board to Stand Back of Ruling Sus

Growth Made by Schools Under Management
After three years' service as super
intendent of the Med ford eitv schools.
Professor Signs lias filed his resig
nation with the school dork to take
effect at the expiration of the exist
ing contract.
The resignation is reported due to
the school board's failure to sustain the
superintendent, in his order expelling
the tour boys troiu the Xorth school
for having playing cards in their pos
session, and forcing him to retract and
tpologize. Superintendent Signs denies
that his resignation is due to this
ause, but states that he has long con
templated resii:ninir.
The growth of the Med ford schools
luring the past three years has been
phenomenal, having doubled in that
time. Their improvement in efficiency
under Mr. Signs' direction has been
-therein! course with office practice, to
gether with full four-year courses in
Latin, history, mathematics, English,
besides economics and psychology and
three years of German, together with
regular music instruction and chorus
work, making as complete a course ns
is ottered by any high school in the
state.
The high school lias been cramped for
room to carry on its work satisfactorily
ami the need of a new building has
been telt tor the past two years. Med
ford is soon to realize the hope and
a new $-10,0011 building will be ready
fur occupancy next September.
