DERIDES IDEAS
OF SOCIALISM
Tenets of Political Sect Denied by F.
A. S. Says But Few Would be Fol
lowers if Beliefs Were Really Un
derstood by the Masses.
To tin- Editor:
1 will take this opportunity to again
reply to a no-called answer to my reply
to the nrtiele on Socialism which ap
peared in the Orcgonian recently. I
hay so-called, because a subject will be
brought up and emphatically denied by
the Mr. Wilson, who seems to be con
sidered the chief scribe of that per
nicious order in Medford. The denial is
all there is to it, as 1 propose to show.
Take the labor union argument. The
writer stated and still reiterates that the
largest organization of labor in the
1'uited States the American Federa
tion of Labor has always repudiated
Socialism, notwithstanding the fact
that Socialists are always trying to in
sinuate that they are the accredited
champions of the labor classes. Mr.
Wilson draws on his imagination for
a lot of European statistics and all
kinds of statistics to show why the A.
F. of I., should be Socialistic and ought
to be Socialistic, but the fact remains,
as shown by the numerous turiulowns
the Socialists have received at the
bunds of the A. F. of L, that it is not
Socialistic.
Always Goes to Europe.
Then we have H little dabbling in
history. Whenever a Socialistic speak
er cannot prove u theory in American
statistics he switches over to Euro
pean statistics, aad if he cannot prove
it by Kuropean statistics be goes back
to ancient times. As the Socialists as
a rule are not familiar with ancient
or Kuropean history, this nnswers the
purpose of argument very well. In this
ease we are told the Bourgeois or Burg
ers of some hundreds of years back
were somewhat similar to the I. resent
capitalists. The class referred to was
th" tr luiea and small shopkeepers,
which is (piite a different thing.
Then we are told that before the
reign of c'liustautiue christians held all
property in common. This might cause
amazement even to the schoolboy who
is familiar with the histories of that
period, as no such mention is ever
made in them, so we presume this was
taken from Wilson's (of Med ford)
"Uise ami Fall of the Roman Empire."
We also read that farmers will glad
ly 1 11 1-11 their farms over to the Social
ist state when they find they call get
more out of them by doing so. If the
lights of Socialism in t trol of the
st it.- are such striking examples of bus
iness management a the present lights
ot the party. I do not think this would
be likely.
On Marriage Plan.
A little further mi in the replv.
Mr. Wilson defies any one to show t liMt
Socialism udvoeat.-s a mutual c msent
plan of marriage. If he will rend his
original argument hi' will find tiint he
advocates that very thing idainly
eil'iligh. Irrespective of this one of the
plainest, principles (or lack of prin
ciple) of Socialism s-ivs that all forms
such as niarriage are n
are creations of Christianity. This
would bring us down to the mutual con
sent plan, which would bring up the
sum of those statistics Mr. Wilson is so
fond of quoting namely, those of the
prostitutes in the United States. It ap
pears to me that then- is a striking aim
ilarity of meaning in "being a prosti
tute" and "getting married bv the
mutual consent plan." It is perhaps
not so very illogical to presume that
priitutes are simply people who be
lieved in the mutual consent plan ao
thoroughly that they coulilPnot wait un
til this became legal under Socialist
government.
Any legislation which would do -..,-
with any of the forms which safeguard
woman's estate sail the verv foiindi.ti,n
of society. This is the very essence of
the most important principle of Chris
tianity. What utter nonsense it would
be for a good woman to enter a mar
riage state that would not insure to
her a companion for life and a father
for her children. The divorce laws are
one of the greatest evils of society. In
countries where there nre no such laws
it is surprising to note how easily fam
ilies agree because thev know thev e;m-
not remarry if they live separate ami
lieeause people who are reallv contem.
plating a life union exercise greater
care in selecting a partner for life than
they would in selecting one whom they
knew they could divorce at any time.
Open Eyes of People.
To return to Socialism. 1 do not
cute to try to continue an argument
when T am "defied to prove I ever
heard or saw'- an argument which
was plainly stated in the preceding let
ter. I have written these letters with
a view of opening the eyes of those
who have been misled to believe or
even vote for a class of legislation
which must, as a first step, destroy
the whole social order of thin. f n,',.
present day, all rights of property, all
piaetices or religion. We have a I
illustration of what hannem.il ,i
the Socialists of France controlled the
government a little over 100 years ago.
limrches were destroyed, ministers and
all members of wealthy classes be
headed. The Socialist leaders decreed
that reason should he worshipped, and
for that pin-pose an immoral woman I
was dressed up to suit the part and
placed on the altar of the Notre ll;
cathedral. The Socialist t,...,l.., I
doctrines of dy all came from Eu
rope, and always declare their adher
ence to the principles of European So
cialism ami leaders, sucli as Mchel Marx,
etc. If the Socialists of the United
States would really understand what
these principles advocate there would
be few who would care to identify
themselves with them. F. A. S.
