SEEKING TO DESTROY
BEAUTY OF NIAGARA
WASHINGTON", Feb. (J. Persistent
efforts an' to be made in eongiess to
prevent, the re-enactment fit th.' Burton
law, passed in 1 ! Mi, governing the dis
position of t lie waters of Niagara
is to conserve the waters of the falls
against encroachment by commercial
enterprises, and the law will expire in
l!in;. Ball' of those opposing the re
enact men t for ten years, as is pro
posed in some quarters, declare t hat
this is a distinct advantage to Canadi
ans, who, because such a large portion
of the falls are on the Canadian side,
are contest to let existing conditions
remain, in preference to agreeing to a
treaty which will restrict the privileges
they now enjoy. For this reason, it is
argued, the law should not Ih re-enacted,
as it will delay the execution of a
general treaty on the part of Canada.

WRITES

Letter to Tribune
Editor Winds Up De
bate Over the Stage
with Ed. Andrews.
Kditor Medford Daily Tribune:
Bear Sir For several weeks you have
permitted Mr. Andrews und myself to
use the columns of your paper to dis
cuss the moral influence of the the
ater. A man of your intelligence could
not help but see the weakness of Mr.
Andrews last article. Before i had
seen it, a business man said to me:
"Instead of answering you, he brings
up ot her things. ' '
Yesterday a professional man met me
on the street and referring to Mr. An
drews' article .said: "lie does not ans
wer you. but talks of something else."
( In Tuesday afternoon two intelligent
gentlemen (not members of my church)
said to ill': "1 would not answer that
man; there is nothing in his article."
Now, Mr. Kditor, I am a very busy man.
who writes a lot of irrelevant matter.
The Hibject of our controversy was
"The moral influence of the theater."
and not. some dead dews who lived -H'titi
years ago. Concerning this controversy
there will be two verdicts. Mr. An
drews' theatrical friends will of course
indorse him; that is to be expected in
the v tv nature of things.
Whet her or not my art ides were
stronger than his I leave to the judg
ment of the intelligent people of Med
ford who live mm rest tin- cross.
