Through run on this division of the
Southern Pacific. j
The two trains from Portland arrive!
close together and left 21 hours with j
no mail or passenger service from the I
north. The withdrawal (tf 12 and 11 j
left no early morning train north nnd !
no late evening train south. To accom- j
modate local travel, a coach was at
tached to the local freight morning and
evening, but this service has proven mi- j
satisfactory to both the public and the;
railroad. i
The freight engines are so heavy thatj
when they start a long train a terrific
jolt is often given the passenger coach ,
attached to the rear, wit h the result
that passengers are often thrown from j
their seats. Recently while a freight)
rain was switching at Cold Hill the)
coach was given such a violent jolt that
a woman passenger was thrown from '
her seat and seriously hurt. j

manufacturers were offering special discounts in order to keep their factories
running and hold their experienced help. Our friends tell us that we have
made the finest display in interior and windows ever made in Southern Ore
gon, and ladies from the east pronounce, our prices right. Are you going to let
this opportunity pass without supplying your needs foi: the summer? Don't
you feel that our prices are exceptionally low . How can you expect merchants
to Ijuv enormous assortments ami sell mi margins that would not jtay running

The following appreciative letter was'
written by the bite Major .1. Ii. Pond,
the most famous of all American im
pressarioH, who d ireeted the tours of
most of the if rent lecturers and soloists I
during the past D years. He was iden
tified with the lecture and concert plat
form since the time of Jenny Kind un
til his death, four years ago. What
lie thought of Homer Davenport is forc
ibly set forth in the following letter,
nnd us almost every resident of Med
ford knows Major Pond by reputation,
his opinion should carry much weight.
It is absolutely unbiased, as he never
had any business association with the
distinguished cartoonist and lecturer.
who will appear here on Friduy night
at. the Opera House under the direction
of the High school.
Mr. Davenport's latest lecture- on
"The Romance and Mystery of the
'treat Arabian Desert" is by far the
greatest thing he has ever done, and in
connection with his own inimitable
drawings made during the course of his
address is simply fascinating.
Major Pond's letter to Arthur Bris
bane, editor in chief of all the Hearst!
papers, and the highest salaried news
paper man in the world, follows:
"New York, Nov. II, 1 fn ii.
" Arthur Brisbane, Ks.:
" Dear Sir Please pardon inv pre
sumption in hurrviiig to write to von
the affair at our house last eve
ning. I wish you might have been
there to have seen and heard Mr. Ho
mer Davenport. I will try to enlighten
you:
"As a lecturer he is simidv noer-
less, and I believe as effective and elo
quent with his voice as with his pencil;
and such a magnificent personality nnd
childish simplicity and power of ex
pression 1 never before witnessed. He
held as intelligent and refined nnn nu-l
dienee as ever he saw, or ever will see,
fairly spellbound for an hour and a
half, wholly unconscious of the effect
he was producing; not the slightest ef
fort for oratorical effect; almost en
tirely without gesture; with a voice ns
silvery and charming as that of the
late Wendell Phillips. It is impossible
to predict the success that must be
in store for this young genius. He is
the best, equipped man for wielding an
influence wider and more potent in nil
contemporary reforms than any man of
his time. So it seems to me from the
brief acituaintance of about four hours,
with It i i ii .
I inn writing of Davenport ns 1 could ,
not write of any otlier man 1 know or,
have over known, excepting llenrv
''"'1 'l "ber. to whom I had the pri-' i

friend during the l;is eleven yenrs of
his life, and who died in inv iirins. I

The Rogue River Land Company has always contended that
Ihere is no (.'nod reason why the real estate business cannot be
carried on honorably and honestly, with due regard for the rights
of both purchaser and landowner. Actuated by this opinion, the
company lias never yet misrepresented as to the character of the
soil or the quality of the fruits produced on same, with the result
that all who have bought orchards through this agency so far
could sell out, if desirable, at an advance of 1011 to olio per cent
above the purchase price. This is a history of which we are
proud, and we shall continue iilong the same' lines in the future.
