PORTLAND APPLE MARKET
IS IMPROVING STEADILY
Advices from Portland announce that
the market for apihii, which became de
moralized during t lie holiday ficaKon,
has been much .firmer, higher prices are
quoted on Home graded than two weeks
agn, and thepe is every reHHoii for the
beisef that conditions will steadily im
prove as the seanon advances. ItccciplH
iron the country are much lighter than
in December, indicnting that stocks are
largely out of growers' hands, aud the
available supply in the Front -street
mnrket Is not such as to give dealers
any apprehension.
A feature of the trade, according to
one jobber, is that the demand for the
cheaper aorta of apples, which was
strong a few weeks ago, haa fallen off
materially. At the same time the stocks
of inferior fruit have been much re
duced. At this time of the year it is neces
ary fur dealers to repack some of the
varieties that are offered, for with some
that are not first-class keepers a few
damaged apples are likely to be found
iu any box. Repac ked lin Id wi ns, t lie
bent valley stock, are quoted at $1.40 a
bo i, while Ben Davis, repacked, go at
. $1.25, and Jonathans, repacked, at 1.50
to LOTS. Hpitzonhcrgs, Newtown Pip
pins and other lute-keeping sorls do not
rerpiire packing at this time.; These nre
held at prices rnnging from $ I ..15 to
2 a box.
Kocent reports from the east show
improvement in the apple markets gen
erally. Stocks of low grade stuff hav
been largely worked off, and the pros
pect is for a steadily stiffening market
for the better grades from t li is him
on. No large shipments are being made
here to eastern markets now, and it
the belief of some dealers that few
a ay will be made, for it is figured that
present atoeks will be none too large
for the regular coast consumption.
(Continued from Page 1.)
will be sure of a splendid reward. See
jfur friends, announce your candidacy
among them and fill out a nomination
blank at once. The contest will extend
only over the period of six short weeks.
good start will work wonders. If
you are not eligible to enter yourself,

case may be, in this contest. She may

MUCH DISSATISFACTION
EXPRESSED BY BENNETT
Judge A. H. Unmet t. attorney for
Binger Hermnnu, W. W. Hteiwer and
several other defendants in the land
fraud rases, attended the drawing of
the veniremen in the United Hlutes dis
trbt court nt Portland, and afterward
aid that he whs dissatisfied with the
fact that the men had been selected
from the vnlley counties iiiHtcud of alt
parts of Oregon. The prosecution takes
every advantage.
"The government has selected the
names of men living in counties not
fur from Portland with the explanation
that this was done for the purpose of
saving expenses," wiid Judge Bennett
"I am not satisfied under the cir
cumstances. I think that names should
have been chosen from all parts of the
state. I do not know if anv action can
be taken, but nevertheless, speaking for
myself, I shall take the question under

J. A. Johnson, who wns beaten int(
insciiHibilitv iu a row at Klamath Falls,
died from the effects of his injuries.
Witnesses disagree iih to what started
the disturbance.
Johnson struck John Schmidt over
the head with a billiard cue. Schmidt
fell to the floor and his companions
I hoiight him dead. The force of t he
blow broke the cue, and with a portion
of it in his hand Joliuybn fled from
the saloon, closely puMnrd by Peter
Petersteiner and John t'arporan.
A few moments later these men led
Johnson into the saloon, lie was bleed
ing and seemed in a stupor. The extent
of his injuries was not realized until he
was taken to his home ami a physician
summoned, when it was found that he
had been gouged in the eye with the
broken cue and that he had received n
severe blow on the buck of the head
The physician at once removed the in
jured eye, which has been torn from its
natural position. The injured man never
regained consciousness and died after
lying in a stupor for several days, with
out telling his side of the story.
retersleiner a no ( arporan were ar-
rented on a murder charge and are now
in the county jail. Petersteiner,
cording to the ovidence introduced at
the preliminary hearing, will be charged
with inflicting I he fatal wounds, while
t'arporan will be held ns an accomplice.
Both are well known here and have
borne good reputations. They are Ger
mans and through thrift have accumu
lated some means.
Johnson was a poor man and leaves
