BBST CO.VL FOUND
ON PACIFIC COAST
Tho b(at coal on the Pacific coast
south of Washington is unique as to
its geologic age. Early in tertiary time,
Ages after tho carboniferous deposits
that formed the great coal beds of the
eastern and interior states had been
laid down, Stone canyon, in the south
east corner of Monterey county, Cal
ifornia, was the site of a mnrshy tract
in which wcro gathered tho materials
that nro now hardened into an exten
sive bed of bituminous coal. The bed
is about lii foot thick and has been
traced for several miles. It is mined
at two openings, but no shipments have
yet been mailt, owing to lack of rail
road connections.
This coal bod was described by Ralph
Arnold, geologist, in the United States
geological survey's bulletin No. 285,
and a brief account of its geology by
M. R. Campbell, in charge of coal in
vestigations, is now published in bul
letin No. 310 (contributions to econ
omic goology, 1906; part 2, coal, lig
nite and peat). Analyses of the coal
by P. M. Stanton are also included. The
analyses show that it is a good gas
making coal, of excellent heating power.
It contains little moisture, but consid
erable sulphur. Several hundred tons
are now piled up at the mine awaiting
the construction of a railroad, and as
the coal is hard and does not stake it
should stand transportation well.

The Longest Year.
The longHHt year on record was the
year 4fl B. C. This year had 445 days
because Julius Caesar ordained that it
should throughout the Roman sphere of
influence. To clear away all the con
fusion which had previously existed in
reconciling the lunar with the solar
year, Julius Caesnr, with the help of
Sostgones, nn Aelxnndrinn astronomer,
undertook-a thorough reform of the cal
endar. He effected it by mnking the
year now called 46 B. C., "the year of
confusion," consist of 445 days, and
the succeeding year of 365 days, with
the exception of tvery fourth year,
which was to contain .160 days. Thus
VM established the Julian calendar as
wo knew it today.
