A WORD FOB THE COUNCIL.
The life of the preaent city council
is drawing to a clime. Much knock
iog has not come up to expectation)!
in many ways, yet all thinga conaid
(red, it has done more for the citv
tliao any other council ever did, and
ii record ia a clear one. No breath
of scandal, no taint of graft has touched
any of the many transactions.
A beginning has been made along
tne right direction in many lines. The
i.ain street of Medford has been or
rif red paved, and water mains purchased
f..r Seventh street and n new distrib
ution "ysteni for the entire city nr
ranged for. Plans have been secured
for an adequate water anpply for the
lity. The houses have been ordered
numbered, a new city hull built, a sur
vey of the townsite made, and grndes
established. A paying water rale sclicd
u!o hoa been adopted. Many other im
provements have been made or started,
much preliminary ground work done.
It is at best a thankless tnik to ac
cept public officii in a small place.
There is no aalary attached to it, much
I anl work, much unselfish sacrifice of
lime for the public goixl, and little but
the anvil chorus for a reward.
This paper has not hesilnted to rriti
cisa the council when il seemed neces
sary. It dora not now hesitate to say a
word of praise when it thinks a kindly
word not out of place.
PROSPERITY MA88 MEETING.

weeks' vacatiuu. The old rooms arc

be two or three wei-hs before the Dew

We are sorry to learn that both .las.

Don't forget that prosperity mnss
meeting scheduled for Mondny eve
ning at the opera house.
Everybody in Medford is invited.
There will be n good progrnm, plenty of
good music, eloquent speeches by elo
quent speakers and a lining up of every
body for the common good.
It is a time to forget petty quarrels,
to bury your hummer, to put away your
at. It is a timn of good fellowship in
a good cause.
You and T and everybody here wnnta
to mako this coming year I lie most
prosperous in the city's history. It is
up to each of us to do our share. V
caa do it easily if wo will. Coino and
learn now.
Everybody is asked tn attend.
H. A. D. Piitrr, the eminent laodrfraud
operator and author of a reminiscent ,
volume on thefts of public domain,
hopes to revel in the air of freedom
within the next few days. Dut be is
not quite sur. That pardon from the,
federal government, which F. J. Henev
wired ai on its way, is due to arrive.
It would not have surprised Mr. Puter
had it arrived last night. But the malls
are heavy at this season and some lit
tle delay hus to be provided for. But
l Iml purdon does not set 1 1 8 tht matter..
There is a brand new warrant out for
Puler, and it is now in tho hands of
Sheriff Htevens, having been placed
wilh him yesterday forenoon by Cir
cuit Judge. Clelnnd. The warrant ia new
only in the sense that it has never been
served before. It traces ils orisjin back
lo the proud days of land-fraud activ
ities in April, KMI5. The document ia in
Ihe shape of a bench warrant Issued t
Salem by the county clerk on an order
from the circuit court of .Marion county.
It was issued following Puter 'a indict
ment, April 2, lsil)!), on a charge of sub
ornnlinn of perjury. Initiative In that
instance wns taken by the state and tbe

To the Editor: I have been reading
your valuable, or ratlior invaluablo to
me, anmi weekly for two months. It is
certainly a splendid paper. I notice
your efforts tn sell $11100 in bonds tn
improve your plant. If vour people
could be in Palisades, Col., and see what
I heir paper has done for that valley
yon would oversell your bonds in
day. They are selling land for PMW
an acra adjoining the townsito. While
I never suw youra, I don't think this
Colorado land would suit me as well as
yours. Would suggest that vou get some
c.ipies of this pnpnr Tribnnn, I think
it Is, at Palisades. The real estate
men back it in Home way and it cer
tainly is fine in securing results.
I wish to send your Horticultural
Tribune to a number of people I nm
interesting in your vnllev. What must
1 lend you per copy with the names?
I expect to visit your valley in March
or April, and if it is as nearly as good
you people say it ia, I expect to In
rate in the valley. From your adver
lisisg, Medford looks the beat tn me
Hut I will look into all the towns
