ARIZONA INCREASES
OUTPUT OF COPPER
Production of Copper Places Terifriry
in Second Place Bisbee District Is
Richest of Great Copper Camps of
the World.
The blister copper produced in Ari
zona in J 005 amounted to 2(i2,;j(ij,10iJ
pounds, an increase of 35,01)0,000
pounds, or about 15 per cent, over ti'
production of the territory in 1105,
and a larger increase by far than that
of any other territory or state. The
miiiei yielded a slightly larger quan
tity, all of which reached the smelters,
but vs not wholly worked up during
the year. The territory now stands
second in product ion, t he output of
Michigan, which just exceeded it in
liJ'i5, having fallen off slightly in lOmi.
Many districts contributed to the
output, but the great bulk id' the pro
duction was derived, as in former years.
from four important camps. Arizona
thus differs from the two great copper
producing states Montana and Michi
gan which have but one important dis
trict each.
Bisbee or Warren District,
The Itisbee or Warren district, in Co
chise county, the third largest district
in the country, and the largest in Ari
zona, made a record blister-copper pro
duction of about i;i,nHi,mo pounds in
litdfl, or about 31,0iili,)i)0 pounds in ex
cess of the production of 1005. This
output, which would have been even
larger but for the failure of the fuel
supply in December, was derived al
most entirely from the (topper Ojieen.
( 'aluinet; and Arizona, Superior and
Pittsburg, and Shattuck-Arizona mines.
If total production since discovery
of the district is used as the basis of
omparison, liisbee is undoubtedly the
richest of tin' .great copper camps of
the country. The ore mined to date is
estimated to have yielded 8 per cent
copper, ami while the yield in recent
years has fallen somewhat below that
average, it was above 0 per cent in
liMKi. All the ore mined in the district
is rich enough to smelt, ami no concen
tration is practiced. The ores contain
but low values in gold nnd silver con-
siderahlv too low, on the average, to
pay the cost of electrolytic refining,

Globe District.
The old silver camp of Globe, in Gila
county, duced approximately 27,000,
(MM pounds or blister copper in 1006, an
increase of about 2,000,000 pounds over
the yield of 1005. This output was de
rived chiefly from tho Old Dominion
and United Globe mines, but the out-H

Warrior, Kureka, Live Oak and Inspira
tion, produced mure in the aggregate
than ever before, and the Arizona Com
mercial, nearer the larger mines, was
also a producer. Fire and consequent
floods i the Og Dounion mine in
the early part of the year somewhat re
duced the output. j
Jerome District. I
The Jerome district, in Yavapai;
enmity, produced in 1006 blister cpper
amounting to 3s,5oo,noo jiounds, a no
table increase over tin? production in!
P.105. The ores of this district are all,
if smeltiiig'grade and carry a high per-'
eentage of copper, the average yield in
10' Hi having been cmividcrujbl.v above
that of the Hisbee camp nnd much
higher than that of other large pyritic
deposits of IJingham, I'tah, Shasta coun
ty, alit'urnia, and Duck town, Tenn.
The content of the ores in gold and sil-.
ver is also decidedly higher than in
any of the other large Arizona topper
camps and far above t he precious met
als yield of the ores of Duck town,
though not very different from that of
the Dingham and Shasta county ores.
Great Eeserved Added.
Through developments carried on dur
ing the year great reserves were added
to th(Me already known in a number
of the mines. The district is undoubt
edly next to the Lake country, Bing
ham and Kly districts in the amount of
ore blocked out, and under reasonable
conditions should be producing annual
ly Kin,(Hio,o00 pounds of copper before
1010.
A matter of much importance, both
to this and to other districts, in view
of recent troubles over smelter smoke
at Anaconda and Ducktown and in the
Salt Lake valley, was the reversal by
the I'nited States circuit court of ap
peals of a decision which enjoined the
Mountain copper company from operat
ing its smelter at Keswick. The de
cision had been brought about by claims
of injury, both to private agricultural
property and to government land,
neither of which, as a matter of fact,
was of much value.
