To the Kdi tor of the Journal: In reading your market quotations of Dei-ember (J 1 note a criticism on flu- Winter I'.anana ap ple, as being a "ciiceit," wliich means n "fraud." On those grounds I beg leave tu differ wiih the nport. First, you say it is a pretl apple like the Iten Mavis, but no! good keeper. I lie J Iteu Mavis is a n i a:ple. If such an j aiip! ' has bc-u put on the market at u Wh.tir Itaiiana then it is a fraud of the worst kind. The Winter Itanana proper is not a pretty apple, but it is a good kepeer. and I think you -will find it a green apple, with u slight blush mi ono side and faintly nipped in the blush. Such is the apple I have re- lived as the Winter Itaiiana. .And fur ther, my authority is of the best re specting the apple and its origin. The genuine Winter Ha nana was brought from Germany about . 'tM years ago ami planted on the farm of a Mr, Wolfe on (lie Tualatin. It has always been a good keeper on that placv ami 'i choice apple, although not a pretty one. The original tree is yet growing there ami is about ltd feet high. I think, if I mistake not. It is a fine-bearer and a good keeper. The tToes on that farm ; were all brought from Germany as 1 , ei'.l before. H i years ago. Such is the correct origin and descrint ion of the Wilder Itanana. Therefore if the mar-.' ke reporter is co'rrect in his version ( of the fruit on the market, then the I apple he speaks of is a base fraud audi Iho-ie persons selling them should be: prosecuted. There have been very many' flees sold mi the strength of the fruit being a g I keeper. ! ai.i:i:i;t . vatkk.
