BVY CHRISTMAS PRESENTS

"Huv your presents early early in

who have to take euro of tho holiday
trade by selling the littto presents nnd
remembrances that go to make so many

"Buy your presents early" circulars
have recently been received in Portland
by the tradesmen and others. Such
men as Jacob Riis, Mark Twain, I'M

Kichard Watson Oilder und others of
equal prominence are tho originators of
the idea.
The circular letter, which is Belf ex

among t he American people to those
who are gett ing ready to commence
their annual Christma-s shopping. Mil
lions of t he let t ers have been mailed
and are now being delivered by old
Uncle Sam.
This movement will no doubt assist
the merchants iu handling greater vol
umes of business as it will remind the
people to buy early during the month
of December. It will call the matter
to the at tent Eon of tho many people
who through mere thoughtlessness have
added to the work of the many shop
girls nnd saleswomen and t ho others
about the various stores who find the
holidays a time to be dreaded instead of
a time of pleasure.

Will MakeBrief Stay
SAN FRANCISCO. Dec. 14. Francis
J. Honey leaves tonight for Portland
on business iu connection with the Ore
gon land frauds. He will then proceed
to Washington to confer with the attor
ney general. He slated that he expect
ed to return to San Francisco in time
to take charge of the trial of Patrick
Calhoun, president of the United Rail
ways, on the charge of bribery, Feb
ruary I. lie denied the rumor that ho
was to bo appointed United States at
torney for the Oregon district.
PRICES OF LUMBER
REDUCED ELSEWHERE
Portland dealers say that the lumber
market is "elastic," which means that
each dealer makes his own prices and
that for the first time at tho metropolis
for a long whilo there- Is real compe
tition among tho lumber dealers.
Up to a short time ago a half doz
en lumber dealers might bid on a lum
ber hmise bill und there would not bo
difference in the ninounts of their
bids, but now there is apt to bo a wide
difference, while bidders sometimea
come back tho second time to reduco
their bids. A well-known Portland con
tractor is responsible for tho statement
that a bill of lumber which would have
cost $1000 last July can now bo bought
for snn.
So it is safe to flay that building is
from 20 to 2.1 per cent cheaper in Port
land now than last summer. Tn other
words, where a contractor would have
submitted a bid of $2000 on a certain
job last summer, he would now offer
to do I he same work for jMoOO or $1000.
Such conditions do not exist in Medford,
where rough lumber is held at $10
per 1000 feet.
