BETTER PROSPECTS FOB APPLES IN NEAR FUTURE While a p des are moving in a fail way, the i" irket is far from brisk, but the belief is quite general asjotlg the Front stre t merchants that later in the season, when the greater part of the inferior stock is worked off, there will be a Letter market for first-clans fruit than now, says the Oregon i an. One dealer fa id today: "There is nothing in the rendition of the markets here or in the east on wbieh to baBe a belief that the apple trade will be stagnant n month or two hence. Th re is still a good deal of low-grade fruit in the Fortland mar ket, but it will he hut a matter of n short time when tliis will disappear. Then there will be a better demand for good fruit, and pric s will move up ward. The markets of the middle west just new are weak, and on the Atlan tie mast the situation is much the same; but there is mill a fair outlet for Oregon apples in Texas, Oklahoma. New Mexico and other parts of thi southwest. We have already shipped there to some extent, and with good results. Yesterday we consigned a ear load of Spy s and Baldwins to Sun Fran Cisco, and we exjieet fair returns for the shipment. Later in the winter the home market is sure to improve." Cordley, zoologist at the Oregon agricultural i-ol lege. A few days ago a reWdut of Port land announced through the press that he had discovered a means of extermin ating the moths. II is device was a sack saturated in sweet cider and hung in an orchard at night with a lighted lauteru five or six feet away. Ilo said that if the trap should bo thus aotlii the morning the sack would contain all the moths in the neighborhood. When this scheme was called to the attention of I'ru feasor ( 'ordley and his ouion of rP requested he replied. O "There is nothing i$v about this the orv controlling codling moth. It is an old idea which periodically crops out, and indeed from time to time vu rious contrivances illustrating the same idea have been-jilneedipon the market and have met with a ready sale. The difficulty, however, with the whole the ory is that codling moth is not at all nttraoted by light." There are but two methods in com mon use for the extermination of cod ling moth. One is the arsenate spray, applitd after fruit has formed and at frequent intervals during the summer. The other is the use of burlap baud ages around t lie trunks of the apple trees a few inches ahove the ground. Til" worms crawl under the burlap to get away from the light, and are kilted by men who go tli rough t he orchard occ.-jinjilly, take off the bandages and replace them. In the best-kept orchards both methods are in use. EDISON FIIAX3ES OREGON APPLES AS BEST EVER Thomas Kdison, the wizard of Menlo Iyjk, says that Oregon apples aro fin er than any he ever saw in the east.
