the engine arrivea in San Francisco,

port! having been treated to an auto
ride from Hornbrook to Hilts by
our townsman, W. M. Hodson, who
Is over In that aectlon with one or

Streak, and tbe way in which he
made this trip certainly entitles It
to that name. Over rocks and ruts,
through water bo deep they had to
hold their feet up to keep from get
ting wet, up and down hill they went
without a single hitch of any kind
leaving only a white streak of dust

Elliott was a former resident of this

leaving, and he can scarcely realize

H. C. Bonney yesterday disposed
of the stock, rigs and fixtures ot the
Nash livery stable to W. R. Tucker
of Jacksonville. Mr. Tucker at once
took possession. Mr. Bonney will re
main In Medford, but has not as yet
decided what business he will engage
in. This deal was made through
the agency of J. B. Wood of this city.

COAL OPERATIONS RESUMED.
N. W. Wheeler, living near the
Stinnyslde coal mine, was in the city
yesterday and Informed a Morning
Mall man that water was being
pumped out; of the old Southern Pa
cific shaft, preparatory to putting It
Into operation. The shaft la 700
feet deep and tbe water cornea with
in 40 feet of the top. The ahaft is
now the property of one Murphy.
The four shafts run at angles
through the mountain. Active work
is going on in shaft No. 4, and the
coal la being shipped to Grants Pass.
FIRST CAR OF MEAT.
The first car of meat for the Un
ion Meat company arrived In the city
Monday and has been stored away In
the company'a new warehouse south
of the depot.
