JURAL
SOCIETY MEETS
"There It far more danger
(ram the blight of the fruit trees
In the yard! right In the towns
than there la front the orchards.
There la more of the blight
right In. the city of Ashland
than there is In all the rest of
the Rogue River ralley put to-
gather."
That was the startling statement
made at the meeting of the Rogue
River Valley Horticultural society,
held In Medford yesterday afternoon
by Professor P. J. O'Gara. who ad'
dressed the largest meeting of the
society In Its history. Those who at
tended were more than amply repaid
for It and If any were absent they
missed a treat of a lifetime.
Professor O'Oara la from Wash'
lngton, D. C, where he Is connected
with the bureau of plant diseases of
the departmtent of agriculture. He
has been sent by. the department to
-assist the fruitgrower sot Rogue
River valley In their fight against the
pear blight and other orchard pests
and be will spend the greater part of
this fall and winter here working In
conjunction with Fruit Inspector O.
W. Taylor of Jackson county, and
with Fruit Inspector H. C. Batemaa
of Josephine county.
Professor O'Gara Is accompanied
by his wife and will make bis bead
quarters in Medford, and any orch
ardist desiring to have the professor
to examine the trees of his orchard
can have It done by arranging a date
and meeting the professor at any
railroad station in this valley with a
vehicle. ,
As to the pear blight, Professor
O'Gara states that as there is as yet
so little of it In the Rogue River
valley that It can be eradicated with
within a year, provided all the fruit
growers co-operate In the work and
are vigilant In the patrol of their
orchards. But If the pest Is allowed
to spread that It would kill every
pear tree and end the most profitable
Industry that Rogue River valley has
within two years.
MRS. B. M. COLLIN'S SURPRISED,
-Arrived at Home to Find House Full
of People.
About as mean a trick as has been
played In Medford tor a long time
waa that perpetrated on Mrs. BenJ
M. Collins, the wife of the city re
corder, at their residence on South
B street, last night, and In addition
to her supposed friends, her own bus-
band turned out to be one of the con-
vyirBiuro, ue yi;iu me pari Ol
"Foxy Grandpa."
m It appears that a number of the
neighbors and frlenda of Mr. and
Mrs. Collins learned that yesterday
waa the Ith birthday of Mrs. Col
lins and they went quietly to work
to the end that they wonld cause her
to remember the day (or several
years to come. In this they succeed
ed far better than they anticipated.
When Mr. and Mrs. Collins ar
rived borne from a shopping trip
about 10 o'clock and the recorder
turned on the tights they behld the
bouse filled with guests and then
some. In addition to that they had
a load of provisions and a number of
presents handsome ones, too for
the lady In whose honor they had ar
ranged the surprise.
Alter Mrs. Collins had recovered,
all the guests proceeded to have a
good time, and they bad It with a
vengeance. Games were played, 600
and whist among them, and then re
freshments were served by the vis
itors. It was at an early hour the
following self-invited guests depart
ed, after spending an evening long to
be remembered by all:
Messrs. and Mesdamea I. L. Hamil
ton, J. A. Perry, Ben Garnett, E. O.
Trowbridge, B. J. Trowbridge, Beau

FLEE FROM FIRE.
Students Leave Clothing Behind In
Their Dash to Safety.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 7. Fire
'Which started In the kitchen of the
Bliss Electrical school, located on the
edge of the district line at Tacoma
Park, a auburb north of thla city,
early today, compelled nearly 200
students to flee for their Uvea In
their night clothing. The building,
which was three-story frame struc
ture, was completely destroyed. All
of the student! are believed to have
escaped from the burning structure,
but lost all their effects. The loss Is

TO BEAT CHAMBERLAIN.
Senator Fultoa Bead Move to Keep
Him Out of the Senate.
PORTLAND, Or., Nov. 7. Sup
ported by an organization now form'
Ing, Senator C. W. Fulton will at
tempt to prevent Governor George
E. Chamberlain from being elected
to the United States Senate to fill
the vacancy caused y the retirement
of Fulton, March 4. There are
enough Ntatement No. 1 members of
the legislature to elect Chamberlain
if they keep their pledges, but efforts
are now being made to Induce a suffi
cient number to prevent the election
of Chamberlain. Ways and means of
carying out toe plan to elect some
one other than Chamberlain are now
being sought.
The argument of Fulton and his
followers is that the legislature
should elect a Republican to the Sen
ate instead of a Democrat. Although
Chamberlain defeated Cake, who de
feated Fulton in the primaries, for
the popular vote, the Fulton people
assert that when Taft carried Oregon
it proved that the people repudiated
their votes of last June for the Demo
crat. Various methods of bringing about
the defeat of Chamberlain are under
discussion. One plan favorably con
sidered Is to have the Republicans
In counties which did not go for
Chamberlain to prepare a petition
urging their senators and representa
tives to vote for a Republican. . The
supposition Is that Fulton may be
selected In the event of Chamberlain
being turned down, although the
name of Theodore B. Wilson and
others have been mentioned aa tbe
possible beneficiaries.

VICE-PRESIDENT JAMES S.
SHERMAN.
These will be the sucessors of
Theodore Roosevelt and Charles W.
Fairbanks on March 4 next, as a re
sult of the national election held
throughout the United States Tues
day. Taft Is assured in the electoral
college of a total of not less than
209 votes, or 67 more than necessary,

J. Bryan, will receive hhe remaining
174 votes. In the electoral college In
1904 Roosevelt received 236 votes
and Judge Alton B. Parker 140.
Taft carried the doubtful states In
the east. Including New York, Ohio,
Indiana and Maryland. In the two
latter atates the race waa very close.
In Ohio the Republican candidate re
ceived a plurality of 60,000 against
that of 256,000 for Roosevelt four
years ago, while on the other band,
Taft appears to have carried New
York by fully 210,000 plurality, or
36,000 more than that which Roose
velt received. In all, Taft carried 29
out of the 46 states.
