man, who said his name was Dr. C.
ft. Brooks ot Portland, Me., con
fessed to the priests the causes
which led him to attempt such a
rash act. He said be bad come here
to seek work; that he had left his
family In Maine In a penniless con
dition, and that It was worry over
their sufferings that had made life
unendurable.
There was one letter, apparently
from the man's wife, saying she
would kill herself unless his next let-
ter brought "something in the way
of encouragement." On the back of
the envelope was written; "I don't
feel as bad as I did when I wrote this
letter. Read between the lines. I
will write a better one Sunday.
Cheer up you will soon be dead.'
The police believe that the remark
"You will soon be dead" means that
the writer knew that Dr. Brooks In
tended to commit suicide, and per
haps had entered Into suicide pact
with him, and may now be dead her
jelf. The letter, which was dated at
Portland, Me., September 3, reads:
"1 shall simply go crazy If your
next letter doesn't bring something
In the way of encouragement. There
Is enough morphine here to end It
all, and If I become much more de
spondent I shall take It and take
the children with me. Murderess
and suicide will be beautiful things
to say about me, but I would rather
be dead than to live like this. I
had so hoped to hear something en
couraging from you today, not hav
ing anything yesterday, and this let
ter before me Is not calculated cer
tainly to keep a woman's heart and
courage up, but rather to sell her
body for a few clothes and stamps.
"You needn't comment on this let
ter when you write, but just brace
up and do something, so that we
may see our way to be together. I
know I must love you, whether I
want to or not. Nothing but love
would have made me stick to you as
I have. The thought of your hav
ing to sleep outdoors almost drives
me mad. Your loving ALICE."
NKW GASOLIN'K MOTOR CARS.
The first regular run of the new
gasoline motor car service of the
Southern Pacific between Sacramen
to and Ralr Oaks and Folsom was
made Tuesday morning. A car was
also started on a trial trip to Chlco
and Orovllle. It was sent out for
the purpose of calculating the time,
including the stops at the way sta
tions, that It will take for this run,
so that a time table can be made out
accordingly when the cars are start
ed in operation up the valley.
Motor car service will be estab
lished on lines radiating from Sacra
mento to Woodland, Colfax, Stockton
and Chlco or Red Bluff some time
soon. One will be placed In opera
tion on each of the lines, and one
will be kept for reserve In case of a
breakdown ot any of the cars on the
regular lines. To begin with, It Is
planned that two trips shall be made
over each line. If the traffic Is not
adequately handled In two trips, the
number will be Increased.
The new motors are of the newest
model and depart radically from the
usual designs of electric and gaso
line cars. Speed seems to have been
the first thing In their construction.
The sides are of thin plates of
pressed steel. The body of the car
Is somewhat like that of a torpedo,
slightly rounded at the back, swell
ing a little at the sides, and narrow
ing In front to a sharp wind-cutting
edge. There Is nothing on the sur
face of the cars to offer resistance
to the wind.
The round windows are screwed
into the sides of the car on a level
with the rest of the surface. The
doors are two slim openings In the
sides and at the center of the car.
They are set In like the doors of a
hack, open by handles which are
sunken beneath the surface of the
car and are fitted In so nicely that
their position Is scarcely visible.
The furniture of the car Is also
very light. The seats are thin and
very wide. The Interior of the car
tapers slightly from the center to the
ends. The walls of the car are of so
Utile width that more seating room
is left than on an ordinary car and
the seats are wider. With two In a
seat the car will hold 60 persons.
Each car Is equipped with a 200
horsepower motor capable of driving
along at a speed of 75 miles an hour.
It Is stated that the motor car will
soon be making regular trips
through Lincoln. The car passed
through Tuesday night on Its trial
run from Marysvllle.
