appearance after fifteen years, and for
tbe first time Dave decided that Nell
was looking remarkably young herself.
He could not know that Nell had
carefully studied the numerous pic

The Hortooa had known Dave In bis

When tbe papers had taken up the
newly made multimillionaire, as the

rich of Idaho welcomed them on b

coast.
' President Dickinson replied to the
various addresses and then delivered
his speech on the legislative situa
tion so far as It relates to the enact

tied to him before the end of the
month. Did you see what the paper
said the other day about bis cooking
bacon in his room and getting the
halls all smelly? He's sick of the
French stuff tbe hotels all have, and
there Is no one to give him what he
wants because be does not know where
to look for It. We'll have him over
hen to dinner, aud well, he'll want to
come again."
Mrs. Horton bad nodded approvingly
lpon her well preserved daughter, and
io the campaign was begun.
They were fortunate in tbe posses
sion of a dependent relative. Tbe
lortons had an income, small, but as
lured, and wben Cleon Blake bad died
penniless they bad permitted bis
daughter. Dora, to enter their house
hold nominally as a member of tne
family, but In reality as a superior
cook.
It was sbe who had cooked tbe din
ner wblcb bad so pleased Cbadwlck
ind which brought blm frequently to
he little house. Tbe men who were
promoting his syndicate Insisted that
be must not remove from tbe botel to
boarding house where bis simpler
needs could be suited, and It was only
t the Hortons' tbat be could escape
tbat terrible menu card, with its res
taurant French and its overrlch
sauces.
He did not always want steaks and
roasts, and the knowledge that there
were good things on tbe bill which be
could not translate only added to bis
dbtsntlafactlon.
It was after an especially trying
meal at tbe hotel tbat Dave armed
himself with a box of violets and sal
lied forth to propose lo Nell. He had
slowly come to the conclusion tbat
Nell wss no longer as young as she
pretended to he. but she offered escape
from the hotel, and be was sick ot tne
place-sick of Its cuisine. Its grinning
bellboys. Ita servile waiters snd Its ar-
rocant clerks.
His business sponsors at least could
ot object If be married and establish
ed a home for himself.
It was a long trip uptown, and
much of his courage had oosed away
when at last be found himself on tbe
Hortons' stoop. He was rather glad
tbat the maid came to tbe door. It
was a certain sign tbat Nell was not
borne, else she would have rushed to
tbe door with ostentatious welcome.
This little maid he decidedly approved
of.
"Tuey will be hack In an hour," aald
the girl. "They have only gone down
town on a ahopplng tour, and tbey
wlll.be so sorry to oave rusmu u-
vront yon wattr
Cbadwlck besitated and waa lost
ne went Into the little parlor and
picked out the meal comfortable chair
Tbe girl paused at tbe door.
"Cau I get you anything before I
gor she asked solicitously. "The
morulug paper Is upstairs. I can get
It In a moment"
"I'd rather talk." said Cbadwlck
comfortably. He waa hungry for con
genial companionship, and tbe little
maid was very different from Nell.
Sometimes Dave grew a little tired of
Nell and ber bold flattery.
"I can't atop." cried the girt. "It la
baking day. and I bave tbe oven full."
"Wben Mias Horton does all the
cuoklugr reminded Cbadwlck. "I
absll have to Investigate."
He bad been so frequent a caller that
he knew from which door Nell was
accustomed to put In an appearance,
her sleeves rolled up and an adorable
dab ot Hour on her saucy chin. Ig
noring the frightened protests of the
little maid, he pushed hla way Into the
kitchen.
n ber embarrassment Dora had for
gotten that Nell had claimed the cook
ery for her own and that upon this
talent she hsd counted for tbe winning
of Cbadwlck. Now that the cat waa
out of the bag tbe probabilities were
tbat Nell would turn her cousin Into
the street. She Inherited a shrewish
temper from her mother, and Dora
knew tbat the two women would be
Implacable.
Cbadwlck sniffed tbe spicy odors
and turned to the girL
"Ho you are the fairy ot the kitch
en?" he said.
"Nell does sll the work. I just
watch tbe things wben sbe goes down
town," denied Dora hastily.
Cbadwlck put one finger under tbe
dimpled chin and raised tbe face that
be might look straight Into the gray
eyea.
"Look me straight In tbe face and
say tbat again," he commanded.
The long laahea fell over the troubled
eyea aa Dora struggled to make her de
uial convincing. Cbadwlck laughed.
"Look here," he said aa he released
her chin. "I came out here today to
ask the hand of the woman who had
made me comfortable. It hi not that 1
cared so much about what I had to
eat It Is not thst I can get a dinner
here without having to fight three
waiters and tbe maitre d'botel. That
wasn't what appealed to me. though
they do say that the way to a man's
heart la through hla stomach. Tbat
sounds funny, but really a man doesn't
marry Just a cook.
"I wanted tbe woman who of all the
million people In this big town cared
enough for old friendship to come and
rescue me from tbe maitre and tne
menu. It wasn't Just the Idea of din
ner, hut the home. I want a borne
of my own. and I wanted ber to run It
for me. But it seems tbat she did not
tell the truth about the cooking.
guess tbe rest of It is pretty much of
the same piece of gooda, and It won't
stand tbe wash. It's you I want, little
woman, not because you can cook I
don't know Just what It is, but I want
you.
You slip on your bat. and we can
run down to city hall and get a license
and a wedding certificate In no time
at all."
"Why. you don't even kuow my
name!" cried tbe startled girl.
"I can guess." was the prompt reply.
"I'm not so forgetful of tbe man who
gave me my first atart as not to be
sble to trace his likeness In Cleou
Blake's daughter. Tbey told tne that
they did not kuow where yna were,
and today when I recognized you It
was that wbicb first suggested the
falsehoods they have been telling and
led me to Investigate the kitchen. We
cau pay them back tor their food.
They'll be content so long aa tbey get
a lot of presents. Will you come.
Dora?"
Something in his tones appealed to
tbe girl, and sbe looked Into tbe eager
eyea tbat searched her blushing face.
Hhe had been sorry for Cbadwlck. and
pity Is akin to love. He read his an
swer In her eyes, and a great light of
gladness came Into his own ss be bent
and reverently kissed tbe tip of the
dainty ear, for her face waa hidden
against bis strong shoulder.
