BRITAIN'S METROPOLIS.
LONDON', Aug. 3. The curious
statisticians have been presenting the
papers with some astounding figures
concerning London's population, Its
food requirements from without and
what would happen Iff the sources of
supply were cut off.
Never In the world's hUtory before,
it Is said, has there been a huge com
munity of between six and seven mil
Ions of people living crowded to
gether upon a small area and entirely
dependent for their food upon sup
plies from outside that area.
London, which with its outer rings,
and including also the enormous
number of visitors now present, has
a present total of close on seven mil
lions ot Inhabitants and produces
nothing In the way of food stuffs It
self. If It were possible for London
to be besieged as Paris was In 1871,
and cut off from communication
with the outside world, starvation
would begin to make Its palus felt at
once.
Everything that Lodon gets has to
be brought into the metropolis.
The flour for the breakfast roots
whs made from wheat which last
year made golden the rich prairies of
western Canada; the milk and cream
came up from somerset, the rolled
oats for porridge was Imported from
the United States; the bacon Is Dutch,
the eggs Danish, the butter Norman.
The fish were caught In the North
Sea. The coffee ripened on an Indian
plantation. Tbe oranges for the mar
malade grew under the burning sun
of Spain.
lAVOTHKR AMERICAN' AltDlNAL.
ROME, Aug. 1. At the Vatican
tonight It was considered certain that
the pope would have consistory either
before November 1, when the reft rm
of congregations becomes effective
or In December, at the close of hi
jublless year. In either Instance, It
(s asserted, his holiness will create
10 new cardinals. The presence of
Cardinal Gibbons Is expected and will
result In the decision where or not
there will be another American car

PEBHAPH A MURDER.
SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., Aug 1.
Varnsl Revalk, the 18-year-old sen
.' it. E. Rerr Ik, died early tW morn
lug at Harbor Emergency hospital
fiom Che effect! of poison, repotted
to be cyanide of potash or chloral
hydrate. Th boy's father believes
that his son was murdered. The po
lice believe It was a case of suicide,
though they admit an apparent ab
sence of a motive.
Last evening Revatk attended a re
ception and afterwards escorted one
ot the young ladle home. Next he
telephoned to nts father that he
would not be home, and then called
up some boy friends to meet him at a
saloon The hoy dlrappolntcd nira,
and after waiting some time he de-
raned About 4 o'clock he was sten
li: ai ether saloon on Pilmort- street.
He bought a quart bo.r: r miner I
water and, after standing on the
street cub some time, hired a hack to
go to the ferry. At McAllister street
he called to the nackman to mall a
letter for him. This was addressed
to Leland 8parks, a son ot the late
Governor Sparks of Nevada. When
the hack man reached the ferry he
called to Revalk and, receiving no
reply, opened the hack and found
the boy covered wltb froth.
He drove to the Emergency hos
pital, where the boy died within five
minutes. Examination of the bottle
ot mineral water showed that Revalk
had drunk a large portion of It.
He was to have sailed tor Manila
Wednesday to take a government po
sition, and It Is thought he became
despondent at the thought of leaving
his home.
DEFECTIVE FISH LADDERS.
Sportsmen complaint of tbe scarcity
of fish In Rogue river thla season and
the general opinion is that inadequate
nan ladders at the different dams are
largely responsible for the shortness
of the Dsn crop, says the Central
Point Herald. The Golden Drift
dam, near Orants Pass, Is said to stop
most of the salmon and steelheads
and the few that surmount that ob
xtacle soon run against the Gold Ray
dam, which at the present low stage
of water seems to be an effectual
hindrance ' j fish on their journey
to tne spawning ground. The pres
ent flsh ladder does not apparently
extend far enough towards deep
water for the fish to have much show
Ketting over It. Persons familiar with
the conditions there report that re
cently not a fish can be seen trying
the ladder, while on the other side
of the river, where water from the
breast of the dam strikes the slant
ing bedrock close to deep water,
dozens ot fish may be seen trying to
make it over. In two or three basin
were constructed on tbe shelving bed
rock at that . -uce the flnh could evi
dently cross tue dam wliuout serious
difficulty. The attention of the state
fish warden suouid be called to this
condition.
AIKSIUI' SAILING.
NEW YORK. July 31. Rising
from the ground like a giant bird and
darting through the air at express
train speed, Henry Farman's aero
plane, or heavier-than-air-flying ma-
'hine, brought here from France,
made its iultial flight in this coun'.ry
Inte this afternoon at Brighton
Rf-arh. It rose from an especially
.upaVed "dock" at the will of i's in
ventor, and after attaining a height
nf 2!i feet, flew straight ahead on a
direct line, finally alighting with ex
quisite grace when the air pilot di
minished the motive power. The
landing provoked cheers. Farman
was surrounded and Utterly hugged
by Jubilant aeronauts.
As a rival attraction to Farman,
Frank Hamilton, the American aero
naut, sailed his dirigible balloon into
the race course. During his flight
tbe propeller broke and tbe balloon
was banged against the grandstand,
throwing Hamilton out. Farman was
the first person to go to his assist
ance, and shook his rival warmly by
the hand. Hamilton secured a new
propeller and sailed away.
KETCH KM. AND KKI.I.V.
SAN FRA.SX'ISCO, July 31. Stun
ley Ketchell of Grand Rapids made
short work ol Hugo Kelly of Chicago
tonight in their scheduled 20-round
contest for the world's middleweight
championship. He knocked his man
out after but 25 seconds ot fighting
in the htlrd round, a left shift flush
to the Jaw placing Kelly hors de com
bat. Although Ketchell won early,
the victory was not an easy one. In
fact, it looked a bit blue for the
champion as he took his seat at th
termination of the second round.
lu two rounds Kelly outfought his
man from the tap of the gong to the
end of the round. Ketchell came up
quickly for the third round and im
mediately laced out with his left,
which he placed twice In succession
to the Chicago man's Jaw. Beforo
the seml-dased Italian had a chance
to catch himself, Ketchell shifted his
left to the Jaw and Kelly toppled
over as though struck by a sledge
hammer.

NEW YOKK, July 31. The titn-et
evidently did not like George Gould's
Interview on hln return from Europe.
MlKKoiiri Pacific broke about three
points shortly after the opening.
The ImpreflHlon prevailed that Mr.
Gould Is down and out so far an his
control In the so-called oould linen Is
oncerned. As he said himself, he bus
lost some diamonds out of his crown,
hut It would seem as If Km pur or llar

crown and all. In fact, Mr. Gwuld
virtually admitted this.
Were It not for the more or less
demoralized condition of the Gould
Affairs tho entrance of Mr. Hnrrlman
Into the control would probably bet
considered by the financial commu
nity aa a bull point on the Gould
stocks, but the street wants to see the
