Mens, president of the Mens Lumber
company, who has just returned from
a four months' tour of Kastern mar
kets, declares that . the retailers In
ibe Kast and Middle West have
smuller stock on hand than for 20
years past. He declares that unless
the Pad flcf coast manufacturers do
not orce tlielr lumber on the market
now the retailers will buy heavily In
the fall at good prices. He declared
that the farmers were buying lumber
In good quantities.
"Lumber and shingle manufactur
ers of tne Haclflc coast are making
a great mistake In forcing their
product upon the market," Mr. Menz
dec la led. "They could obtain at
least $100 a car more than they now
get If they would cease manufactur
ing In advance of an actual realiza
tion of orders. The stock thus pro
duced Is crowded upon the market
and buyers are deterred from making
their usual fall purchases, believing
that still lower values may prevail.
"retailers of lumber and shingles
soon will be obliged to purchase, re-
arilles of their caution not to buy
until absolute bottom Is reached. The
mllU producing red cedar sidlug are
receiving practically as high prices
to Jay aa they were able, to obtain
d.iring the limes of high prosperity.
This U not due to a reavy demand
for red cedar siding, but to a limi
tation of production. This object
lesson sl.ould not be Ignored by lum
ber unit shingle manufacturers of tne
Northwest and the Pacific coast."

Fraud Charges.
KOSBBURG, Or.. June 26. Dep
utp United States Marshal W. B.
Griffith of Portland today arrested
three Roseburg citizens, Louis Kohl
gen. Joe uilp and L. S. Shipley, pur
suant to Indictments which were re
turned against the men In the gov
ernment land-fraud cases. Bench
warrants for the three men were is
sued out of the Federal court in
Portland two days after the indict
ments were returned. In each case
the amount of bonds was fixed at
$1000. These were furnished by tbe
defendants upon arraignment this
evening before United States Com
missioner W. V. Calkons of Eugene,
who came from Eugene this after
noon for that purpose. These ar
rests are the result of the rush for
land which were filed upon at the
land office In this city last April. It
has later developed that nearly ev
ery claim has either a squatter or a
miner contestant, and the result Is
that nearly all of those who filed up
on the land at that time, some 20 in
number, are liable to arrest on the
charge of perjury, tne charge upon
which the above-mentioned men were
arrested. Marshal Griffith admitted
today that he has warrants of arrest
for other persons In the land cases,
but he declined to make known the
uames of the parties wanted or where
they reside.
