Tht'te la oiu thing, that Wall street
ami the triiKU ranuut control. That
It the bounty of God. Of all the
utKim of returning prosperity, the bul
letin of the crop-reporting board of
the department of agriculture Is the
happiest portent.
Spring wheat shows a prospect bet
ter than the average for ten years
past. The yield of winter wheat bids
fair to be larger than any crop since
that of 1901. Had early prospects
for corn have changed, so that now
the outlook Is for a bumper harvest.
And the ratio of Increase holds good
with oats, rye and barley. It will
be a fat year.
The siwclal providence that seems
to watch over this nation, pouring
out upon us new stores of nature's
wealth each season. Is kinder this
year than ever. There have been
times, as In 1K94, when the coming
of great crops meant distress to the
farmer; when the storeholses of the
whole world were glutted with a sur
plus from the preceding year, and
large harvests lu all nations forced
prices down to or below the cost of
production.
There have been other years when
scant crops brought big prices, ho
that consumers everywhere suffered.
This year the granaries of the
world are empty. The outlook for
Euroiean harvests are not flattering.
There will be a world demand that
will keep prices at a profitable level
Tor the 10,000,000 farmers of Amer
ica Yet the yield will be so boun
tiful that 4 he consumer will not be
penalized by exorbitant prices or a
dearth of supply.
The gold that will glow over our
ripened fields will be worth all and
more of that we prayed for during
last fall's panic. Ore digged from
the mine leaves only a barren empti
ness. All forms of trade make no
real Increase. Even manufacture
means only a change In form and de
velopment of a value already exist
ing. From the tilled earth comes
the real new wealth, each year's
bounty bearing prom I He of a new gift
in the year after.
Once more the lesson Is borne In
upon 3s that our greatness comes out
of the ground.
SCOTT FOR omx;o.
PORTLAND. June 22. John M.
Scott, assistant general passenger
agent of the Harrlman lines, returned
yesterday from an extended visit In
Chicago, where htf attended sessions
of the Transcontinental Passenger in-
soclatlon. The weather In the mid
die west Is a month behind the son-
son, he said, and the crops are m n
doubtful condition In the com bolt.
"It "is expected that the weather
will change and the heat will brine
corn and other crops forward rapid
ly,' he said. "There has been too
much rain in some of the states, not
ably in Nebraska. The same condi
tions exist In Iowa and Kansas
There has been cold, wet, unseason
able weather In many sections. At
the same time the farmers are not
feeling blue, and It Is expected that
things will come out all right. . The
railroads are doing a heavy pa ima
ger business both east and weft.
There Is a very heavy passenger
movement over the O. R. & N. and
Union Pacific lines at the preseut
time, owing to floods along the
northern lines. All our trains are
carrying extra sleeping cars.
'While Chicago Is not a place th:it
suits a man who has resided on the
Pacific coast. It la nevertheless a wtiii
derful city, and la growing steadily
The feeling In the cast is extremely
favorable toward the west. Every
body seems to be well posted on Or
egon and Its political events. Ail In
telllgent men with whom I uined
referred, with a surprising famllUr
Ity, to affairs Id this state."
Mr. Scott returns to the coast with
Increased admiration and resperi fr.r
the land of his adoption. Althoiu.i
he has a very large circle of friends
in Chfcago territory, he was glad to
get back to Oregon, and Is enthusias
tic over the favorable conditions ex
litsng here for crops, business and
Immigration.
KTATKHOOI).
Among the minor planks in the
splendid platform adopted by the Re
publican convention Is that which
pledges the party to tbe "immediate
admission of New Mexico and Ari
zona as separate states." That plank,
while not expressing one of the dis
tinctive "Roosevelt policies,'' Is
worthy of special notice for two great
reasons first, because It Is right,
and second, because It shows that the
national Republican convention puts
patriotism above partisanship. The
plank was not Inserted for the pur
pose of getting the votes of the two
territories, for they have no vote In
national elections. Their admission
as states Is morally certain to mean
the admission of four new Demo
cratic senators In congress, which it
Is not In Human nature for Republi
cans to approve. But because those
territories are now ripe for state
hood; because their traditions and
Institutions are so diverse that they
ought not to and would not accept
statehood as one state; but because
It would be unjust and tyrannical fo
longer condemn their Inhabitants to
political tutelage, a patriotic Repub
lican convention pledges the party to
their speedy admission to the Union,
regardless of Its effect on the Repub
lic a power la congress.

SALEM. Or.. June 22. The offi
cial abstract of ballot, cat at tbe last
election, as compiled by Secretary of
State Benson and prepared for final
canvass next Monday, shows tbat
there were 110.614 votes cast at the
1A0X election, as axalnst 99,445 In
1906, and 99,13." In 1904. and at
that the vote this year was not nearly
up to registration.
Complete returns rrom all counties
also show that while the prohibition
ists and socialists stuck loyally to the
party candidates for congress and
justice of the supreme court on the
state ticket, they varied from their
party affiliations on the vote for
('nlled States senator by over 5000
votes. The question arises whether
Cake or Chamberlain polled the
greater number of those votes.
The greatest vote received by any
candidate or the stute ticket was that
polled by Justice Bean of the Supreme
court, who received a total of K6,-
024 votes, but be ran upon both the
Hepubllcftn and Democratic ticket.
He was followed next in order by
State Food and Dairy Commissioner
J. W.' Ilallvy, who polled a total of
6."i,24 vots. Next comes Governor
Chamberlain, for United States sen
ator, with a total of 52.421 votes, or
l.',22 votes over his Itepulillcan ad
versary, II. M. Cake, who received an
aggregate of 50.X99 votes.
Of the 17 initiative and referen
dum measures, 12 were adopted by
various majorities and seven were
voted down. Those which pAxsed
successfully were the act providing
for the locntion of public Institutions
at places other than the capital city;
changing the date ol the general elec
tion from June to Nuveniber: prodd
ing for sheriffs' custody of prisoners
In counties of more than 100,000 in
habitants; the I'nfverslty of Oregon
appropriation bill; Upper and Lower
Columbia wlmon protection lulls:
special flection act for Impeachmoiit
of public officials; legislative Instruc
tion act on tbe question or 1' 11 1 ted
States senator; the majority election
act; act limiting expenses of candi
dates: Jury and grand Jury act and
the Hood Kiver county bill.
Those falling to meet approval
were the art increasing tha salaries of
the members ot the legislature; the
act increasing the number of Justices
of the supreme court from three to
five members; free railroad trans
portation for certain public officers;
the armory appropriation bill, equal
suffrage, single tax measure and the
act giving municipalities power of
regulation of munlrlpaj industries,
gambling, saloons, etc. .

Inft Knffenc.. -
KI'GKNE. Or., June 20. No spe
cial developments were uncovered In
the attempt to blow up the house
occupied by the traveling Mormon
elders on Washington street Wednes
day night. It Is clearly evident that
there was no attempt 'to destroy life,
aa In the morning after daylight tbe
rollowlng notice waa found by the of
ficers stuck up on a stick near the
premises;
"This Is a warning to your tribe.
Yon. have tormented . the publlck
enough. Move, or the next shott will
do more. We mean of the MOR
MAN TRIBE."
The police have a pretty good idea
who did the work, but have no di
rect evidence and hence cannot make
an arrest on suspicion.
It Is quite evident that there waa
some other motive for the act than
simply prejudice against the Mormon
religion, and there are a number of
stories afloat which have not been
at yet verified.
