The forest ranger'i life la Joy,
His days are spent in play,
Ilia weeks are fun without al'oy.
Ills months one happy rounMo
lay.
But Just to keep himself la trim
He works a bit each day.
Monday aeea a mile of trail
Blocked by a landslide'! fall;
He mends a couple of bridge- frMl
And cuta the grade on the canyon
wall.
But aside from putting that trail In
shape.
He does not work at all.
Tuesday finds him full of saod 1
And clean aa a chimney sweep.
He rldea ten miles to the driveway
stand
And tallies tea thousand head of
sheep;
But seeing this trifling duty done.
He spends the day la sleep.
Wednesday morning some tourist
came.
Loaded with Ignorance, matches
and gall,
Veil primed to set the forest aflame
And burn the timber straight and
tall.
He trailed them till they were safe
la bed.
But otherwise did not work at all.
Thursday a couple of thieves he
caught
Filing fake claims to get the wood.
This day's work almost came to
naught.
For they were friends of Senator
Goode.
But after the gang was safe in jail
He loafed, aa a ranger should.
Friday he made a- timber aale
With a certified check as security.
He figured the stand by the decimal
scale
And branded U. S. on every tree.
So, while he might have done some
work
He passed the day la ecstacy.
And Saturday, like the rest of the
week.
He played at tennlB and golf and
ball;
He shod bis pony, cleaned the creek,
Burned some Utter and built a
stall;
But, generally speaking, the livelong
day
He wrote his reports that's all.

TO CARE FOH CHOP
The following paragraph in a news
dispatch from Walla Walla, Wash.,
shows how eager the farmers are for
men to help in caring for the crops
this season, and there Is no excuse
for so many men lounging around
the cities of the western part of Ore
gon and Washington as there have
been for several months past: "The
alfalfa crop this season Is an unqual
ified success, and now that a good
stand has been secured, hay growers
are fearful lest shortage of men in
caring for It result In great damage,
especially If rainy weather should oc
cur next week. Several Walla Walla
men who have retired from the farm,
but who still own ranches, say they
have been boarding men free of
charge for the past two weoks In or
der to hold them until the Lay crop
was ready for harvest. The men
have been dolug nothing for their
keep other than waiting until the al
falfa crop Is ripe to cut."
VISITS MKDFOim TWICE
IX TWEXTV YEARS
Thomas Oster, who lives In t he
Cove, south and east of Ashland. Is
certainly a "home body." Twenty
years ago he passed through Medford
on his way to Jacksonville to file on
the homestead he now occupies. Med
ford wasn't a city then; in fact, ll
wasn't much more than a chapparal
patch, and It didn't impress him. He
made another trip hither some 12
years ago, but since that time has
been without actual personal knowl
edge of the metropolis of the Rogue
River valley. In the time he has
spent upon his homestead his visits
to the towns of the valley hnve been
strictly confined to excursions made
necessary from business reasons,
and his late visit to this city was
me of these to appear as a witness
in a. land case.
HiRht, You Arc.
Nothing else of the same cost adds
so much to the attractiveness o.' a
town, nothing else gives such an air
of prosperity and thrift, of comfort
and content as the good repair tod
neat appearance of building tmd
fences and generally well kept up
premises. A few dollars spent ny
way of paint, and a little time spent
now and then fixing up, toning up
and keeping things In order, lias a
most wonderful effect and a store of
satisfaction. Great and Imposing ed
ifices are not necessary to beat't ttnd
attractiveness. We know of some
humble cottages, yet are so enveloped
In neatness and tidiness ot all thl k;s
round about, we never look on tfcr
but we are reminded It must be
pleasant to be there. Jacksonville
