OREGON APPLES
THE BEST
"Oregon apples will in time be as
famous as California oraucei.'
"The commercial value of good
apples la kt eater than that of or
ungei and Oregon should profit
thereby."
That is the sumniar of W. H. Sel
leck's opinion, says the Oregon Jour
nal of Muy 28, and he says that
there are many la New York who
agree with him. Mr. Selleck Is con
nected with the securities corpora
tion of 40 Wall street, and travels
mdst of his time between New York
and London, and London pnd Paris.
He was formerly from Los Angeles.
Recently when he was going to
Paris be thought It would be a
splendid Idea to take a banker friend
there a box of apples. He went to a
fruit dealer and made known his
wants for the best apple in the mar
ket. "There Is only one apple in the
market worth buying," he was told,
"and tbat Is what is called the Ore
gon apple. Every one Is asking for
It now, and will take nothing else
after once trying It."
This was sold to a former Califor
nia man, who knew of Oregon ap
ples. But be wanted the best and
bought them a box of 75 pounds
and paid $7.00 for them. They were
shipped, and when be arrived In
Paris a little later he found his
friends delighted. "The finest ap
ole we ever had." was the general
' vordlrt.
But alas for the enthusiastic
banker! So delighted was be with
these beautiful specimens that he
gave some to bis friends. His friends
told of the unusual fruit, and their
friends came begging to see them.
And so they were doled out, one by
one, and the banker's heait swelled
with pride as he saw the admiration
his apples caused. But one day he
awoke to find that all hau been so
elven away but a mere hilf dozen,
and he closed his hand and heart to
ihelr pleasure and kept them for his
family.
Hut his generosity was well re
paid. Now these numerous friends
will have nothing but Oiegtm ap
ples, and they send to London for
them and think nothing of the price
they must pay. For are they not
ihe best apple that has ev.T crossed
ihefr epieur?au French pastes?
Mi. Selleck go.j on to say that
he himself, when in New York, buys
iliem every day at the fruit stands
and ptiya IS cents to 20 ceuts apiece
for them, and does not cunsitler it
money ill spent. Certain kinds of
apples are sold there under the gen
eral name of .Oregon apples, and this
is advertisement enough. They are
S;tltzenberg, Newtown Pippins and
the Banana apple, which has never
been grown elsewhere. Mr. Selleck
pays :t0 cents for them at the fruit
stands. Mr. Selleck is eager that
the commercial bodies here take up
the matter of systematically adver
tising Oregon apples so tta to give
ihem the prestige that the Califor
nia orange enjoy 3, and he says it
will be an easy maUer adl a remun
erative one, for the commercial
value of the apple Is greater than
that of the orange
QUARRY DEVELOPMENTS
President W. T. Tr.rnuin of the
Rogue River Valley n. II road returned
from Portland on Sunday afternoon,
where he purchased the rails and
ties for the building of tbe spur
track to the city's quarry on the
other side of Jacksonville. The work
of the laying of the track will be
undertaken as soon as possible af
ter the arrival of te material and
the quarry will probably be shipping
rock to this city before the end of
the month.
The quarry Is being developed at
a rapid rate and there Is any quan
tity of rock In sight. It will not be
difficult to quarry and the crusher
will soon be to shape to handle the
rock as It Is quarried. The new
track Is to be constructed In such a
manner as to allow for the most ex
peditious handling of the rock pos
sible.
President Barnum Is also to pur
chase cars for the hauling of the rock
which will handle the rock In the
most convenient manner. He will
have the cars ready by the time that
It Is ready to be shipped.
Election In Joeephine County.
The election la Josephine county
is a badly mixed-up affair. If the re
ports received by this paper from
Grants Pass are to be believed. A
socialist was elected county clerk, a
Democrat was elected sheriff, two
Democrats were elected to the legis
lature and the county went for
Cake. Every precinct In the county
went dry with the exception of Slate
Creek, which precinct has never had
a saloon.
