R.Terstde, Cal., April 17. Thrown
Into a wild panic by the explosion of
a huge oil tank In the outskirts of
this oity yesterday afternoon, a herd
of elephants belonging to the Sells
Ploto circus, dashed madly through
the streets of the residence district,
driving terror-stricken citizens be
fore tbom and leaving a trail of de
struction In their wake. Tbe leader
of the herd Invaded the business dis
trict before he waa recaptured and
ran ainuck Jn the courtyard of tbe
Olenwood Hotel, whore he attacked
MIbs Ella Olbbs, a prominent church
woman, pinned her against the side
of the buUdlng with his tusks, then
threw her to the ground, trampled
upon her and Inflicted Injuries from
which she died.
D. P. Chapman, a guest of the
hotel, attempted to stop the elephant
and was In turn attacked by the In
furiated aolmal. which knocked him
down and trampled upon him, break
ing his leg and otherwise Injuring
him. The big beast then crashed
through the wall of the courtyard
Into the hotel barber shop, wrecking
that establishment In gaining Main
st root, plunging through the plate
glass window of a store on the op
posite side of the thoroughfare and
after hurling Frank A. Bird to the
ground and goring him all but fatal
ly, wns rounded up In a livery stable
and made captive.
Four other elephants of the main
herd, which had In the meantime
been recaptured, were brought to
the stable to aid In tnibdufng the
leader, and before, Ue riB chained
fast to his comrades the brute added
one more to his list of victims by
hurling one of his keepers over a
high bcurd fence, Ladly Injuring him.

Backs Into a Street Cr mrd Killed
Eugene, Or. Hattle, the 8-year-old
daughter of Warren Summers, of
this city, was run over and killed by
a streetcar tt the corner of East
Thirteenth and Ah'.er street Friday
afternoon. The car was roundlrg
the coYner and rolng at the usual
slow rate of spvd there, when the
child was 8n walking backward
oward the car In the middle o( the
track, while talking to some com
panions nearby. She was on her way
home from the Patterson school,
which Is only half a block from
where the accident happened. She
did not heed the warnings of her
companions or the bell of the car,
and the car struck her In the back,
knocking her down. The wheels of
the front truck mashed her head to
a pulp, causing Instant death. The
child's father was working with his
team on tbe street only a block dist
ant and hastened to the scene.
Oriental Limited Wrecked.
Bpokane, Wash., April 21. Ori
ental Limited No. 2, the Great Nor
thern fnat passonper train, east
bound, was wrecked and burned
near Summit, Mont., yesterday. At
ilmost tbe highest poln: In tbe Rocky
Mountains, the tralu struck a land
llile. demolishing the engine and
upset ;lng or derailing every car.
The wreck caught Are and the flames
swept through the train, destroying
every car except the last two, the
standard sleeper and the observa
tion car alone escaping. Reports
received by railway officials hore
state that no one waa seriously hurt
by the wreck.
Rider Killed on Horse Roundup
Bend, Or., April 21. A. A. Bald
win, while rounding up horse near
Davenport-8 tan ley ranch, was thrown
from his horse and so severely In
jured that he died this morning.
The injured man, In company with
Lucky" Baldwin, was driving A
bnnoh of horses and In torn way
ran hit horse Into a wire gat. The
horn waa thrown mad Mr. Baldwin

men entered the Cltlsens State Bank
at Chautauqua, St miles west of Cof
feyvllle, yesterday morning, and
after forcing Cashier C. C. Walter
house and Delegate Easley, a busi
ness man. to enter the vault, locked
them in, aeeared all the currency In
sight, amounting to about (3,000,
and escaped into the Osage Hills,
across the line. In Oklahoma.
Emma Goldman Ejected from Hotel.
San Francisco, April 20. Emma
Goldman, Dr. Benjamin Reitman,
her manager, and Alexander Horr,
the advance agent of the party, were
foroed to leave the St. Francis Hotel
yesterday by the hotel manager,,
who objected to the notoriety caused
by the presence of the woman anar
chist, her following and the attend
ant policemen of Chief Blggy's es
pionage corps.
Anniversary of Ban Francisco Fire.
San Francisco, April 18. With
weather almost Identical with that of
April 18, 1900, San Francisco today
celebrated the second anniversary
of the great fire by working as hard
as ever to rostore the city. No
formal ceremonies marked the day
of days In the city's history, and the
usual routine of a day's work was
not disturbed.

Colt With a Cow's Hoof.
Albany, Ore., April 21. A freak
colt has been born on the farm of

this city. One of Its front feet Is a

Fort Worth, Tex., April 21.
There are Indications that the storm
which haa prevailed for the past
several days In North Texas Is about
over. The loss la estimated at mors

of the water for the next ten years,
until Its part Is complete.

Pendleton Criminal Informa
tions, charging violations of the 14
hour law, against M. J. Buckley, gen
eral superintendent of the O. H. &
NT. Company, and theejraln dispatcher
at The Dallos, were filed In the Cir
cuit Court last week by District At
torney Phelps. The complaint al
leges that a freight train crew was
kept on the road for 17 hours with
out unavoidable cause for delny.
This suit is interesting, from the fact
It is the first ever brought under Ore
gon's 1 l-hour-law, and it will prob
ably be the last, since the Federal
law making 10 hours the maximum
run supersedes the s'nte law.
Crime Was Caused by Jeabmsy.

created by a mad love for the girl
who would not marry him on his
demand was shown before the Cor
oner's Jury on Friday as being the
only motive which prompted John
Grills, aged 21 years, to murder Miss
Ora Boby. aged 22 years, and com
mit suicide near the girl's home.
The youlhfulnoss of the victims
of the tragedy and the fact that both
are well known and connected with
respected families created a sensa
tion locally.

Harney City, was fined $50 for al

At a meeting of the Grants Pass
Commercial Club It was unanimously
decided to get up a float represent
ing Grants Pass In tbe Rose Festi
val In Portland.
William Best, sawyer In the Wll
lard Case Lumber Company's m'll at
Rainier, was struck In the arm by a
shank from one of the large saws
last week and his arm badly lacer
ated. The County Clerk of Clatsop
county haa been Instructed by the
court to draw a warrant for $12,190
to pay the first half of Clatsop's
county's portion ot the State Agri
cultural College tax.
In the special elty election at Eu
gene held Friday the amendment
for the purchase of the Willamette
Valley Company's water plant waa
carried. The vote for the Issuance
of $300,000 bonds for the city water
system also carried.
Co-operation In road building Is
an experiment now to be tried near
Weston. The farmers, the county
of Umatilla and the town ot Weston
will Join Interests In making three
miles or roadway leading from Wes
ton to Wtldhorse creek.
O. R. ft N. Detective Wood has
arretted two more box-car thieves
at Umatilla and brought them to
Pendleton and landed them In Jail.
They were caught In the act of rifl
ing a box-car, and when arrested had
In their possession 3,000 cigars.
The Astoria Chamber of Commerce
has made arrangements for the
charter of a steamer to take the
members and their families on an
excursion outside the bar to greet
the American battleship fleet as It
passes the mouth of the Columbia.
Governor George E. Chamberlain
will begin an active and aggressive
campaicn for popular endorsement
for United Slates Senator at once.
Whether It will be a stump-speaking
campaign or a still hunt will depend
Vtrgely upon the sort of campaign
the Republican candidate will put
up.
The low prices that have ruled In
the hop market for the last few
years have not caused many Oregon
hop growers to go out of business.
Perhaps 2,600 or 8,000 acres have
been plowed up in the entire state,
but enough yards are left, under fa
forable conditions, to produce a crop
is large, It not larger, than that of
1907.
