predatory animals, and tbat the loss of

would Increase tbe loss to half a million

The United States Forest Service has
demonstrated tbat efficient work can
be done by trained hooters who are sent
to the ranges to makes special business
of killing wolves, and such other denl

sheep. A number of such huulers are
now at work, aud they are ridding some

Warden Frank Conley. of the Mori

fully wounded this morning, and his
First Asslstaut Warden, John Rob
inson, was killed, when three life
convicts, George Rock, W H. Hayes
and another whose name It not given
out, made 1 da.h for liberty in the
penitentiary or.ee at S o'clock. U
It thought the Warden will live.
Robinson's throat wat cut from
ear to car and the juglar vein aw:
severed. Conley't throat was ttash?.!
and he was stabbed several times in
the shoulder and groin before he tvr.;
able to draw bis revolver and shoo:
two of the assailants down, Con
vlcta Hayts mid Rock were both
shot down by Conley after the latter
had been wounded.
The attache on the prison authori
ties and a subsequent effort to escape
has been long planney by Rock and
Hayes, wbo were cell mates. Both
were armed with penknives, tbe
blades ef which were sharpened like
rasors. Tbe three convicts were
brought to the office of the peniten
tiary by Deputy Warden Robinson,
to be tried for some tr'vlnl Infrac
tloa ef the prison rales, and Conley
waa waiting to sit In judgment.
Hayes had for some months been a
"trusty" and had been given the po
sition of turnkey. He had been
placed la the aame cell with Rock
because the authorities believed be
would watch the later. vb.o waa the
roo3t desperate criminal In th; Inrvl
tutloa. The moment the men entered
the office door, Hock turned swiftly
anon Robinson, who was closing tthr
door behicd the men. and quickly
drawing a knife, be began stashing
at Ciq dei::'y warden'3 throat. Rob
inson was ;inab!o to retreat or move
rTefore his thront was ctit v.'IdrTopen
and he sank to the floor, dying.
At the same moment that Rock
attaoked Robinson, Hayes also pulled
a knife similar to that of Roc'i and
s'arted for Conley. The latter re
treated to the roar of the office be
fore the oncoming desperado, how
ever, Hayes had tdatdied his throat,
cutting him from the left car to a
point under the cbln. The convict,
seeing hia intrdrd victim getting
away, grappled with him and stabbed
hlra several times in the shoulder
and groin.
Although blee-llng terribly, Con
ley managed to draw his gun from
bis pocket and fired tour timet with
the weapon pressed against Hayes
abdomen.
As Hayes sank to the floor. Rock
rushed at Ceniey, who dmptled the
two remaining cartridges In bis gun
into Rock and the latter also went
down. The third convict who had
been called te the "carpet," took to
his heels at the tret of tbe battle,
bat was quickly captured and placed
,1a hit cell.
How tbe convicts secured posses
sion e-f the knives is a mystery. The
Infraction of rules had been planned
la order to reach the warden's office,
