force of mechanics put to work.
Tbe Oregon Granite Company was
Instituted In 1900 by K. A, Hicks
and A. H. Walker, both granite cut
ters. Although handloepped by
lack on funds tbe two young mi
saooeeded In doing a business tbe
first year ot over 13,000. Since that
time the ' bus'ne.s baa oonstantly
grown, although a laok of funds has
kept It confined to a letall trade,
P. M. Karsnaw purchased Mr. Walk
er's Interest In 1905, and has devoted
his time since then exclusively to
salea.
. T.ij new oompany had little dltfl
colty In disposing of tbelr .took to
local capital' Mr, Hicks will coo
tinae to superintend toe prnotlcal
side of the business while Mr. Her
sbsw will devote his attention to
salss.
The company owns 80 acres of
quarry land four milee west ot this
oity. Tbe granite Is blue grwv, re
sembling Barre, the famous Est tarn
prodaot, although darker. Tbe spar
and quartz closes np readily, taking
a high gJoss with little ailfflcnlty.
Eastern experts have pronounced tbe
oeel granite tbe finest found west
of tbe Mississippi and no leee than
five wboleaale dealers have sent their
representatives to thts city, In the
past, to try and make arrangements
for the bendling of the product of
the local company. The oompany,
however, haa been forced to oootloe
their attention to the retail trade
and have not been able to oover this
as they wonld have liked, With
more oapltal at their disposal this
field win be entered and both bnlld
log and monumental stone will be
supplied to dealers.
During 1907 tbe oompany erected
a new building tor tbelr abope on
tbelr property at tbe oorner of blxtb
and D streets. They Installed con
aiderable new machinery, Inolndlng
an air ooompressor and pneumatic
drills, a Right polishing machine and
other -necessary implements. Their
quarry was developed to a consider,

steam hoist and power derrick are ?to
be Installed at onoe and srora start.
ed. Oregon granite will be exten
sively advertised aa another onexoel

the ease with whlob tbe granite may
be plaeed on tbe market, makes It
possible for the local company to fur

tbe new corporation.

FOR SIDE STREETS
Speaking about "coming through"
and "making good," oaa anyone see
anything wrong with tbe kinks tbe
present eoancllmen are taking out
ot Medford's progress chain!
Now what do yon think of thlo?
Several years ego onr city bought a
rook crasher, bat after It wee pur
obased the discovery was made that
tbey bad no lock to ornsh and since
then nary a rock has that rook
crusher crushed -bnt It has oansed
more heated arguments and crushed
more hopes for psaoe and Joy la tbe
world beyond than any piece of ma
chinery ever purchased uy the city
but It remained for the present olty
oounoll to make Its parcbsso a bless
ing. Here Is how it is all going to
work onr, Tbe oity needs crushed
rcok on some of Its streets got a
crusher, but no rook , down at Uold
Ray there are mountains of rook, the
crusher is to be tsken to that point ;
tbe Condor Water A Power Com
panys' electrlo plant will furnish the
power and oiushed rook wiU roll
tram that crasher otto Soatbern Pa
olUo flat care ;' these will be hauled
to Medford and teams will oonvey the
rock first to O 'street and when this
is oompleted other streets, save
Seventh, which Is to be paved, will
be similarly treated. Now tbat
work, ant all right and looks easy
and It Is easy when one considers
tbat the 8. P. Company haa agreed to
haul this rook to Medford for twenty
oents a ton, oi about M a oarload
and there Is no .limit to the amount
they will haul at these figures.
Now these are not shadows, or pipe
dreama, but the city eoancllmen
bave tbe project under consideration
and will undoubtedly carry out tbe
plana as above outlined.
THINK THEY HAVE

The "Berkeley Oroharda" la the

NEW SAW MILLS
When Edgar Hsfsr. manager of tbe
Iowa Lumber A Box Company, mixed
himself np with the Psolflo A Eastern
railroad, a taw weeks ago this paper
said la "loud type" that things were
shaping themselves for a successful
termination In railroad and lumber
matters In this neck of tall Sugar
pine vastnesa, and we were correct In
oar deductions.
Listen to this: Mr. Hafer Is now
in Portland arranging for an exten
sion of the Pacltlo A Eastern to tbe
timber belt i tbe Iowa Lumber A Box
Company bas two sawmill plants
now en route to tbelr timber Inter,
sets, near Uerby ; several wagon loads
of carpenters and laborora It ft this
week for that locality to put np the
buildings newoeasary for properlly
equipped logging oamps, and surveys
on the railroad extension will eoon
be In tbe field.
One of the saw mills to be put to
use In tbe Butte creek country le
the one the oompmy previously oper
ated near Jacksonville, and the other
Is an entirely new outfit, shipped
directlly frcm Poitland. Thee, will
be located about five miles soatb ead
east from Derby. It may be given
out, with reasonable aasuraaoe, tbat
tbe railroad will reach tbls point this
coming season and that next winter
tbe lumber sawed by these mills will
be brought to Medford by rail. The

Qood Roads.
"How are your roaas In Calif
ornia?" That was about tbe first
question that 1 was aekea when I ar
rived In Medford h few daya ago, by
a prominent citizen, who wae vie w-
lng the Main street ot Medford, My
answer was, "I have ran my auto all
winter." He said, "Yon would have
a oloe time running It here," I agreed
with him. .
It looks to me aa if tbe road ques
tion in Jaokson county abonld be
the paramount Issue In your eomlng
county else ton
ic oomparlng Jaokson county to
Humboldt county, Calif,, jou have
no road, except a few miles that
bave been built tbe last two years,
The people and ofHolala of Jaokson
oounty would gain valuable know
ledge it tbey would go over tbe
roads of California and note the rut
that tbey ere in at home. They
would come home and be asbamsd
to look tbe pablio In the feoe until
tbey bed started a movement of eucb
dimensions that yon would have good
roads Inside of two yean.
You have! tbe rioheet and moat
prosperous community that I bave
visited and bave tbe rotten est roads.
It is not only ;in Jackson . county,
but tbe fiurce conditions exist In
every county in Oregon. ' la It any

For in.tanoe yon atart from here
and go to Creaoent City and even
though you do not have anyone In
ycur party that bas ever been over
tbe road, you know when you oome
of tbe California line by the abrupt
ness tbat tbe oonditlon of the road
changes from rooks to smooth road
bed, with tbe rocks and stamps re
moved. In California the clearance
of your ear Is of no moment, as all
the obstructions In the oenter of the
road have besn removed, Humboldt
oounty Is a poor example of tbe ever-
age counties of California, as it la
very thinly settled, being covered
with heavy forests, but the roeas of
Humboldt county-even tbe roads
snub aa the road to Butte Falls are
equally as good as .the piioe of road
between Pboenlx and Talent, But
tbe oounty otliolale are not satisfied,
but are now bonding the oounty for
$000,000 to bnlld better roads. Tne
law being auch that the Incorporated
cities and towns pay an equal rate
of taxation with tbe timber owners
and farmers to- the payment of
bonds and Interest. Now If Humboldt
oounty with its smsll population and
the good roads it now haa oan afford
to bond Itself for $600,000 for better
roads. Wbat had Jacaaon oounty
ought to Ce eble to do, with the re
sources It has? Ibis Is a subject
tbst tbe people of Jack on oounty

should kno wbst tbey propose to do

they will not oomintt Themselves to
