The Del Rio Ranche
In rll my trnvels up and down the
S. IP. road from Portland to San
Francisco, and over other roads
through tbe state of California 1 have
aeen no liner sit for a ooontry plaoe
than tbt Del lilo ranoh at Rock
Point, owned by our genial towns
men, Messrs. Deuel and Weeks. You
need no iutioduotion to these gentle
men, and when I aay I spent two
dears at their Del Rio ranch In com
pany with Mr. Alt Weeks you ,wlll
know my time waa not lost. When
these gmtlemen purchased this ranch
there waa no doubt to them baring
an eye for the artistic A more beau
tiful spot could not be imagined, ad
mlrahly situated on tho banks of
Rogue River . and penned in on all
aides by lofty mountains, an abun
dance of tiout and salmon In tbe
river and tbe mountains alive with
game, what more eould a person
wish. The Uell Rio ranch consists
of 730 acres of fine, deen soil, with
a genUe slope to the Roane river, and
every fo;t can he put In cultivation.
Notwithstanding these gentlemen
purchased this ranch in November,
nnder the management of Mr. I. T.
Ualllgar and ably assisted by Mr. M.
Qcackenbush, they have at present
about three thousand pear and apple
trees and about fifteen acres of Tine
yard planted, not to speak of aoiee
of brush grabbed and burned,
and milea of old orosa fenoe torn
down.
In bis capacity as superintendent
Mr. Galllgar, In leaa than three
months time, baa transformed a run
down drllnpldetcd stage station Into
a neat, Will aopt appealing ranch,
which in font or five yeaia from now,
will be without an exoeption, the
Quest country place between here
and Portland.
I bave bad about twelve years ex
perience with grapes of different
votieties, and bave" seen grapea" grow
In all kinds of climates and under all
kinds cf conditions, soil, etc., and
will truly any, 1 hove never men a
country or state, where there Is such
a fine prospect for grape oulture aa In
tbe Roane River Velley ani no place
in tbe Rogue River Valley more ad
mirably adapted, soil, attuatlon, eta
considered, than tbe fifty acre tract
wblofa Messrs. Deuel and Weeks will
eventuality set to table grapea on
their Del Rio ranch. Xhla vineyard
will be mostly Flame Tokay, and
Emperor, and probably some Malaga,
tbe tatte, everything considered, be
ing tho best paving table grape on
the 'market today, liesldes pear, ap
ple and grapes, thia ranch will have
a aprinkling of cherries, berries and
otbtr small truits. The bouse and
all out buildings will be remodeled,
nice wide drive ways, flanked on
either'slde by large shade trees, will
run In all directions throngh the
ranch, and tiaina stepping every day
will give their passengers an oppor
tunity to view a ranch of which Ita
owners can Justly be prouud.

NOT HAVE
THIS ROAD?
Last week an Item In this paper
stated tbe fact that W. M, Uodaou,
the automobile man, bad been In
Klamath , oounty, looking over tbe
situation with a view to eetablttbing
an automobile stage line from the
terminus of tbe California 4 North
eastern road, building Into Klamath
oounty, to Crater lake.
Right now la tbe time for Medford
to get busy on tbla tourist trattlo to
Crater lake. This is the nearest
point from which to leave the South
ern Pad He main Una for the lake,
and there is but one obstacle to tbe
establishment of an automobile Una,
running on regular schedule line
between here and tbe lake, and that
is known as the Flounce Rock grade.
Mr. Plodson said to Mall reporter
In discussing the matter: "If that
bill waa placed In good condition, by
a change of route so that a machine
could be gotten over It easily, tnere
la nothing to prevent successful
anto line being ion from here to tbe
lake. The government baa agreed to
put tha road la shape as far aa Pros
pect, the torder of the forest reserve,
and If tbla hill la fixed 1 will pot on
an auto aectlon gang to do the minor
repairs. Tbla wonld give Medford
tbe advantage of tbe majority of the
tourist trattlo to the lake and unlsaa
something of tbe nature Is done tbe
trattlo will start by way ot Klamath
Falls ani It will stay there. If It
starts from here It will likewise stay
here, aa even when the railroad runs
through Klamath and within twenty
miles of the lake, a good road from
chls side, together with the Jmany
seen lo attractions along the line will
Induce the majority ot tha tourist
to start from tbla aide. It would
cost b.tween $7,000 and 18.000 to
eliminate that Floanoe Rook grade,
but there would be more than that
amount spent in the oounty the
first year by part lea visiting Crater
lake. Tbe vlaitora will be greater
than ever in number this year, and
moat of these people have money and
know bow to spend It.
"No," aaid Mr. Uodson "I am
not considering tbe proposition of
leaving Medford. If I start the
eastern line It will ba merely a alda
line, but 1 wooll much rathir start
from tbla side.' I
