UNWRITTEN LAW.
-The Cede" ee It Is Understood In the
Southern 8tatee.
They call it "the code" in tha
southern states, and to this day the
code often takes precedence of stat
ute law among jnon of southern
birth.
The code is this: If a man insults
vou by publicly calling you a liar or
in any oiner iasmon you uo not
knock him down on the spot, as vou
would in some states, but you warn
tbe man that vou will snoot him on
sight. The warning must be in the
presence ol witnesses or in writing.
Then you go home and get your pis
tol, and the other man presumably
docs the same thing. After that
wherever you and your adversary
meet the one who sees the other
Brst opens fire, or if the recognition
is simultaneous it is merely a ques
tion of which can pull his pistol
quickest.
Usually c is killed or badly in
jured. Hut if the warning has been
given in due form it is 10 to 1 that
tlio jury will not convict the killer.
Tho verdict is "self defense" or at
most "manslaughter." There is
hardly a case on rocord of a murder
er beinz hung for his share in a
duel of this kind, however one
sided.
If the cause of the quarrel h"
anything to do with an insult offer
ed to a lady of the challenger' fam
ily the latter is far saier than if he
had Killed a dog. In most cases ha
walks out of court and the cheers
of the audience.
There was ghanly tragedy at
Oak Grove, Va. A man named
Marx quarreled with a neighbor
over an alleged insult to a young
lady. In the ensuing affray Marx
killed Taylor and two of his friends
and seriously wounded a fourth.
The coroner's jury decided that
Marx had acted in self defense and
exonerated Mm. .
To some ears this code of the
southern states sour 'Is wicked and
criminal to a degree. Yet the
southern code of honor is certainly
no worse than that prevailing in
the berman and Austrian armies.
If a Gorman or Austrian officer
quarrels with another of his own
rank a duel must tok aluce at onco.
The insulted man is in Coventry
till blood is shed. But if the insult
is from one so much higher in rank
that the other cannot challenge, the
latter is doomed to commit suicide.
The late Archduke Otto, the Aus
trian empcror'i nephew, got tipsy
ono night and brought a crew of
boon companions to the doors of
his wife's suit. A young lieutenant
on duty drew, his sword and sore
he would run the first man through
who touched-the door handle. Otto
struck the boy in the face and then
retreated. Tho lieutorant could
not challenge one of royal blood.
He prcTarcd to commit suicide.
Most happily the story came to the
emperor's ears. He telegraphed the
lieutenant and Otto to attend at
once at the Hofburg.
Then he rated Otto fiercely and
ended by saying: 'Tour royal rank
precludes Lieutenant from
challenging you. But no restric
tion Viinrlo. mmV With thnt hf
stepped np to the archduke andl
truck him a heavy blow on tho
check with his open hand. "Now
go," be bade him. Then he turned
to the lieutenant and embraced
him. "You will receive your com
mission aa captain tonight," he said,
'and with it your exchange to an
other station." Chicago Iiecord-

While it is usually conceded that
puns belong to "the lowest order of
wit" there have been puns which
can hardly be classified in tlys way.
One of these is said to have been
made by Jeffrey Keller, an Irish
lawyer, who was more noted for his
wit than for eminence in his chosen
profession. A lawyer of the name
of llayne, who was a highly respect
ed but decidedly heavy person, had
risi'u lo a judgeship, whilo Keller,
who had entered on his legal career
at about the same time with Maync,
was still much in want of clients
and foe. He was in a courtroom
one dny when Jlavne was solemnly
presiding, nnd he turned to a friend
who Hit beside him and plucked at
his sleeve.
"Soe there 1" he whispered. "There
sits ilavne, risen by his gravity, and
here sits Keller, sunk by his levity.
