Mrs. Crowell was seated at the piano upou which was a lamp, and Mr. Crowell was near by, when the lamp exploded, scattering the burn ing oil all over her and the room. With great presenoe of mind she threw herself on the floor and wrap ped herself in a rug. Her husband came to her assistance immediately and helped extinguish the flames, but not before both were pretty severely burned about the arms and hands. In the meantime their oldest son had given the alarm and the neighbors came to their aid -and saved the house. It was a narrow escape from loss of life and property, only averted by prompt aotion and presence of mind. Master William Vawter enter taiued a number of his young friends at the borne of his parents, Hon. and Mrs. W. I. Vawter, on Wednesday evening of last week. There were games of all kinds, guessing contests, musio and everything to make the evening pass pleasantly for the young people. Besides there was something good to eat, without which no child ren's party would be complete. There wasn't anybody but had a good time. Quite a orowd had gathered around to see the oper ation and as the train which was to take the stock pulled by the yards the oattle confined in one pen stampoded and knocked out a section of the fenae. Then the orowd stampeded also, a oouple of prominent profes sional men doing some of the fastest sprinting they had done sinoe their youiti, crossing the traok in front of the train. The cattle were stopped meanwhile before tbey escaped from the corral by the prompt aotion nf Mr. Mitohell and Henry Urtb. One of the aforesaid mentioned profession al men declared that the engine had brushed his ooat tail, as he cleared b e rail, when a by-stander of Ger man descent remarked: "VyJ I oross ed after you, but mine coattail vaB not so long like yours. The color soheme of the decorations was pink and white, and the hall was decorated with pink hearts as being appropriate to the season. Alter the routine busi ness" of the evening bad been con eluded the members and invited guests proceeded to enjoy themselves The following program was rendered: Piauo trio, Sterling Rothermal, Treve Lumsden and Vernon Vawter; vocal solo, Miss Mabel Jones; piano solo, Miss Flora Gray; recitation, Miss Tou Velio; piano solo, Mrs, Edmunds; violin solo, Iris Cook, The principal game of the evening was a guessing contest, in which Mrs, E. E. Gore won the prize. After this the gentlemen were required to assume as nearly aB possible the expression of counte nance of "Sunny Jim." W. H. Mo Gowan's expression was the nearer the ideal than any one else's, so he captured the prize. Refreshments of sandwiohes, coffee, salads, ice cream and cake were served. The committee in charge and responsible for this best of all good times was oomposed of Meedames Pickei, Vawter, Short Warner and Orr, and Messrs. Vaw ter, Miller and Lumsden. Trowbridge, u party was. given in honor of the twelfth birthday ot their daughter, Miss Mary, whloh was attended by a number of the friends of the young lady. Several very happy hours were passed by the young folks In playing games of various de scription and enjoying themselves a only light-hearted youth can. Dainty refreshments were served during the evening. Those present were: Vida Thorn berg, Callle Vogeli, Iva Martin, Caroline Andrews Gladys MoMlllan, Loralne Lawton, Laoille and Frances York, Mildred Bliton. F. E. Martin and E. F. Winkler have opened a second hand store in the old bioyole stand of F. E, Martin. They are prepared to buy all kinds of goods and will give a square deal, 'all and give them a ohance to bid on your goods. They are reliable and energetio young men and should be euoouraged. 52-tf The "Medford basket ball team came baok from Roseburg Wednesday morning, leaving their scalps with the Rosoburg boys by a soore of 31 tn 10, but full of praise for the hospital ity of the oapital of the Umpqua country. After the game the high sohool girls gave a reception to botn teams, followed by a social dance and a swell supper. The boys say they would be willing to be "lioked" again, in order to be entertained so royally. The team came down Seventh street from toward the school house at a furious run, but fortunately one of the animals fell just before reach ing the Jacksonville railroad track and that stopped the runaway. Just in front of the team waB a lady in a buggy and the street further on was orowded with vehioles.
