BY At C.HOWLETT. Mr. Vestal has had several teams ou the road doing road work laBt week. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Gay, of Central Point, were out last Sunday, to visit their boo, Chas. B. Gay, and wife. Mrs, Jaok, who has been in Wash ington on business for several weeks, returned home last Friday. J. B. JaokBon has put up a neat board fence around his farm on the north side of Butte oreek and as or dered wire fenoing to fence the rest of his farm. I understand that he intends to turn his attention to rais ing hops. On Tuesday of last week, as K. G. Brown was leading a span of horses to water, they began to play and one of them kioked at the other and struck , Mr. Brown on the urm, innioting a se vere wound, but not breaking any bones, Mr. Messenger came out from his home on Elk oreek laBt Wednesday a week ago, bringing with him Mrs. Rose Trask, of Ashland. Mrs. T. has been engaged in teaching HCbool in that section and was on her way to her home in Ashland. Last Friday night the Eagle Point band gave a danoe and then was quite a number of persons attended and they report having a nioe time, but the room (Holmes Bros.1 warehouse) was very oold and the music could not be heard aoross the room, on ac oount of the house having no oeiling in it. Last Monday as Thomas Young was 1 crossing the culvert on the Fryer ditch, his horse fell on his leg, break ing the bone in the lower part of the leg and oiushlng the limb very badly. Just about the time he was taken to the Eagle Hotel, Dr. DeArmond, of Medford, came along and he was soon joined by Dr. Jones. They re duced the fxaoture and Mr. Young was taken Dome the same afternoon. ; Died December 7, 1905,?at the resi dence of her son, John Hart, Mrs. Elizabeth Wooley ; aged seventy eight years, seven mouths and seven days. Mrs. Wooley was a native of Ohio and came to the Willamette valley in 1850, For hard colds, bronchitis, asthma, and coughs of all kinds, you cannot take any thing better than Ayer's .Cherry , Pectoral Cherry Pectoral. The re mains were interred in the Browns boro cemetery, the funeral services being conducted by A. C. Howlett. On Wednesday of last week the magnates of the Medford & Crater Lake Railroad Company arrived in our town on a speoal oar at 2 :30 p. m. Hon. D. H. Miller made the open ing speech, in whioh he eulogized the men who have been pushing the enterprise along, showed the advan tage tnat the road will be to toe ooun try by being the instrument by which the vast forests will be taken to mar ket, eto., but he might have added that the road will be the cause of the opening up of thousands of acres of our hill land that is now lying use loss ; that in a verj few years this land will be oovered with orohards and vineyards. This is no idle dream for thirty-five years ago, when I used to travel over the oountry along the foot hills east of Medford, the land mere was not considered wortn enter lug even at SI. 25 per acre, it is now covered with flno orchards and beauti ful homos and here in the Butte oreek oountry we have hundreds of aores of land that is just bb good as any of tnat lana. Tills is out or my Hue and I must not trj to boom our country, but Mr. Miller's sneeoh was all right. Then Hon. Hugo von der Hellon came forwaid and with a few appropriate remarks introduced Hon. John K. Cook, who gave us a short speech on the cost of railroad construction. Then W. I. Vawter and a few others were called and eaob made some verv appropriate remarks. Our school closed ior the oocasion and the teach ers took the children on the oar and had Engineer Tryer take them for a Bhort ride, which was quite a treat to some of them. While the car was waiting several of the Medford DeoDle visited the Sunny Side hotel and sam pled Mrs. Howlett's mince pies, ap ples and pears and all hands seemed to enjoy themselves very well and promised to come back again. Calomel. Calomel was discovered by CroIHus in the seventeenth century, and the first directions for Its preparation were given by Bcguln in 100S. Its name Is derived from two Greek words, sig nifying "a beautiful black," because In Its preparation a black powder is the first step in the manufacture, being produced by rubbing mercury together with corrosive sublimate. JL Wonderful Paaroda. The great Buddhist shrine, the Bhway Dagon at Jtangun, Is no tern pie, but a great pagoda, rising from Its platform to a height of SOS feet and all completely covered with gold leaf. This platform, with a perimeter of nearly 1,400 feet, is the .place of wor ship. The pagpdti Itself has no interior. It Is a solid stupa of brick raised over a relic chamber. A cutting made into its center has revealed the fact thai the original pagoda had seven casings added to It before it attniued its pros cut proportions. The shape of tho pa goda Is that of an elongated cone. It 1b divided by Burmese convention into twelve parts: First, tho base surround ed by a groat number of small pago das; then the three terraces, called Pichayas; next the Boll; the inverted Thabelk, or begging bowl; tho Bnung yit or twisted turban; the Kyalan or ornamental lotus flower; the Plantain Bud; the brass plate for tho Htl or umbrella; the Htl; tho Seln bwln or ar tificial flowers; the vane, and, last of all, the Sclnbu or bud of diamonds. Butterfly collectors arc seldom able to estimate with any confidence tho value of their collections, since the prices for specimens so constantly va ry. A case In point is that of the blue butterfly of Brazil, specimens of which were originally sold for from $50 to $75. Afterward some collectors who supplied the London market ran into n perfect swarm of these butterflies and shipped to England such quantities that better specimens than tho original Insects sold for $1 each. It not Infre quently happens that two or three specimens of a certain family aro dis covered by collectors, who, encouraged by the high prices received for their finds, are tempted to prosecute their search for this particular variety with out result for several yours. Suddenly they or some other collector finds the Insects grown plentiful, and the cher ished varieties of tho cabinet become among the commonest specimens. The thing to aim at in studying the beauties of nature, as Is tho case with 11 artistic pleasures, Is tho perception of quality, of small effects. Many of the people who believe themselves to have an appreciation of natural scen ery cannot appreciate It except on a sensational scale. They can derive a certain pleasure from wide prospects of startling beauty, rugged mountains, steep gorges, great falls of water all the tilings that are supposed to be pic turesque. But, though this Is all very well os far as It goes, It Iq a very ele mentary kind of thing. Tho perception of which I speak Is a perception which can bo fed In the most familiar scene, in Ute shortest Btroll, even In a momen tary glance from a window. The things to look out for arc little accidents of light and color, little effects of chance grouping, the transfiguration of some well known and even commonplace ob ject such as is produced by the sudden burst Into greenness of the trees that peep over some suliurhnn garden wall or by the sunlight falling by n happy accident on pool or flower. Cornhlll. Wt'.tftir For uu EclluNO. Lewis Swift, tho astronomer, tolf how ho waited Iu Deliver for tht eclipse of 1S7S. For a hundred yean Astronomers bad expected this eclipse, and throe minutes before tho computet) time for it to begin Mr. Swift seated himself at his telescope and looked into a cloudle3B sky. "It was a sol emn moment," said he. "No words can deseribo it Slowly, as if time'i ceaseless flow had begun to slacken two of tho three mluutcs had passed away, and no eclipse and nothing tc indicate that anything unusual would happen. I then began to count the tick, tick, tick of our sidereal clock till all the seconds had passed away, and no eclipse, but before tho next tick suw three black mountain peaks on the moon's limb glide on the buu. Th eclipse bad begun just three-quarten of a second too lato." It is such tilings as this that make ouo respect tho nccu racy of tho computations of the as trouomcrs when they tell us about tht distances In the heavens, the weight and size of planets and other kindred things. Relieving; tho Brain. The persistent use of tho muscular system Is well calculated to relievo the bralu and nervous system of their ten sion, says Dr. H. J. Hall in Good Housekeeping. It is also truo that manual work pleases and satisfies the mind when its results are good. All this becomes clearer when we realize how vainly wo may sock relief from nervous fatigue in physical rest or oven in recreations of tho ordinary sort The quiet room or tho quiet hill side, so Buggcstlve of rest and peace these aro too often Impotent In the presence of carklug care. One reason for this failure is that tho brain and tho body aro commonly not tired In what is called nervous exhaustion, but ore only Irritated, while the senso of fatigue, which Is so misleading, Is merely the result of that Irritation and may bo termed a psychlc fatigue. Un der theso circumstances it is easy to understand tnat it is change, not nec essarily physical rest which is so sore ly needed. Nulling; the Glioet. An extraordinary lnstanco of rustic superstition has been brought to light In a Hungarian village. Owing to sin ister rumors as to tho cause of death the authorities had tho body of a peas ant exhumed and wore horrified to find the hands and feet nailed down to the coffin, while a long nail had also been driven through the heart An inquiry was at once held, with tho result that an old woman confessed that tho act had been perpetrated under her direc tions. The man bad died a sudden death, and, there being a superstition in Hungary that persons dying under such circumstances haunt tho house in which they die, tho further superstition has grown up that postmortem reap pearances can be prevented by nailing the body in its colllu. The old woman further admitted having dono tho same thing in all similar cases for many years. London Globo. Why the Horao lleeda tho Baffler. An Interesting report regarding thi development of the musical sense in horses was made by a committee of German zoologists and botanists. The report says: "Tho investigations as to tho musical sense of horses have shown that that senso is very poorly develop ed in these animals. It has been prov ed beyond doubt that horses havo no notion whatever of keeping time to music, and that at circuses they do not dance according to tho tuno, but that tho musicians have to keep time according to tho steps of tho animals. "Other investigations show that horses do not understand military trumpet signals. It Is only the rider or the animal's instinct of imitation which iuduccs horses to mako the moves required by tho signal, but no horse without a rider, however care fully trained, tnkos the slightest no tice of a trumpet signal, and the same observation has been mndp on a largo number of' cavalry horses without riders." $ Mitchell ' - DO VOU CONSIDER QUALITY Wagon M WHEN YOU BUY A WAGON t Does 70 years oxDerlenea in wnovin hiiMrii the oream wogon nook oouat with you?
