Some Seasonable Advice.
It may be a piece of superilous ad
vice to urge people at this season of
the year to luy in a supply of Cham
berlain's Cough Remedy. It is al
most sure to' be needed before winter
is over, and much more prompt and
satisfacory results are obtained when
tHkeu as soon as a cold is contracted
and before it has become settled in
the system, which can only be done
by keeping the romedy at hand. This
remedy is so widely known and so al
together good that no one should hes
itate about buying it in preference to
any other. It is for sale by Chas,

"If there is much virtue in the doc
trine of Inherited qualities, why Is
there such a vast difference, as we see
In a multitude of instances, between
brothers or between sisters?' said an
observer of men and things. "Years
ago I began to make a study of this
matter, and I have a book at home
filled with cases bearing on fraternal
disparities. I know of a learned jurist,
and a most excellent man from every
point of view, who has a brother In the
penitentiary. I know of a family of six
brothers, three of whom were men of
the highest social and business stand
ing, while the other three were knaves
and vagabonds, outcasts from society.
They had the same father and mother,
the same moral and intellectual train
lug. Whence the difference? I know of
two sisters, one of whom is an angel
aud the other a totally depraved crea
ture. Inherited qualities often exist
and are influential in the formation of
character, but the law of their trans
mission is wholly uncertain." Wash

She consequently told him that his

A SWIMMING POOL.
How to Slake One lit n Brook or Run
ning Stream,
The brook or running stream of
natural outdoor water gives a variety
of chances for the man who wishes to
lire his life aright Tho brook can
be converted, without being diverted,
Into a swimming pool for boys by
building a dam at the point where the
banks do a little extra shelving and
tend to form a natural basin. Tho bot
tom should be spuded out and made
more of a reservoir lu its capacity and
shape. The dam Itself can be made by
a family of boys at the cost of tho
lumber and nails involved. The em
bankments are sodded. The sides of
the spillway are made of wooden posts
driven Into tlie ground and boarded
up. This makes a box up affair, or
rather two boxes, ono on each side of
tlie stream. These boxes are fltled
with sand, rocks and sods to make a
solid cubic piece of reslstnnco. Tho
sodded embankments run - across the
valley or depression of tho brook hol
low to the higher ground. By means
of a lever a pole (playing Into a
wooden Jawed socket and weighted
with a rock or pieces of Iron) the
water gate can be opened against a
strong headway of water. The water
flows over tho top of the spillway
when it Is closed, and by raising the
gate tlie pond can be emptied or re
duced to tlie normul level of tho brook.

THE MALE CRICKET.
CarloaH Trent lie Develops For tbe
Lady of IIIh Chulcc.
. In tho American Naturalist J. L.
Hancock gives an interesting descrip
tion of some of tlie habits of tho
striped meadow cricket Tho most
striking part of the occount deals
with tho allurements which the male
crickets possess. When he wishes to
nttract the femalo tlie male cricket
raises his fore wlhjrs vertically above
his head and by rubbing thorn over
each other produces a high pitched
singing, or, perhaps better, shrilling.
When the female's attention has boon
nttrncted she goes to the male and
proceeds to take advantage of the re
freshments offered. Upon the mate's
back, situated well forward on the
thorax, la a little depression or well in
which a small quantity of semifluid
material Is secreted. Climbing up on
tlie male's back, tho female eats this
apparently delicious morsel .with groat
eagerness. - It Is evidently something
especially choice which Is formed
there for her especial benefit This
proceeding suggests that treating as a
means of winning a lady's lovo is not
confined to the allurements of Ice

he wrote it. When Thurlow read the

"So tlie bishop said, my lord," was tho
