The Bad Intelligence reached ns last Wednesday morning at 12:30 of the sudden death of Ubarles Knighton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Jones, of Central Point. There seems to be a singular chain of divine providence lu conneotlou with the family. The first death was that of their only daughter, a young lady. She started from home in her usual health, on horse back, and in fifteen minutes tho word came to her mother that she was dead. Then their youugest son, Edward, started to go to chop wood and fell into a ditch and was never restored to conscious ness, but died in a very short time, and. this last case was equally as sad. Long afterward Charles V. built some mil ltary nefs on tbe' Atlantic, and Louis XL's galleys chased tbe Barbary pi rn tea who infested tbe shores of the Mediterranean, but It was Francis L apparently who first conceived tbe idea of a war fleet, purchased and equipped from the royal treasury. He converted tho small fishing vU lage of Havre into a fortified port, which speedily attracted commerce to tbe mouth of tbe Seine, and he pro jected a scheme which he did not live to realize for tbe construction of an oceanic navy under canvas. "Fleets were massed in tbe Mediterranean," writes Mr. Norman in bis "Corsairs of France," "and for tbe first time In history a French squadron, passing through tho strait of Gibraltar, de feated an English fleet off Brest, and then, moving round to tho eastward, drove off tbe blockading squadrons of Henry VIII. from Boulogne." A writer In the Outlook com menting upon this says that bo was ap parently without passion or feeling, yet the appearance was not reality, and at one of Mr. Thomas rehearsals It was fully contradicted. At a certain point In tbe symphony tbe orchestra was playing In perfect time and tune, but with a certain me chanical effect which no one bad no ticed until Mr. Thomas suddenly rapped the music stand before him. Tbe orchestra stopped. Then with his band he imitated the action of an organ grinder. This deathlike silence has a peculiarly de pressing effect If two men are camped and one of them goes to a dis tant township to get provisions while the other remains behind to look .after tbe camp, the man who Is to remain says to his mate in forcible gold fields language, "Now, BUI, don't you bo long away. Ceylon provides us with the bulk of our cinnamon, which is tho aromatic bark of certain trees common to that island. The trees are never allowed to grow higher than ten feet During the season of harvesting, of which there are two a year, the brunches of three to five years growth are cut down and the top surface of tho bark scraped away. Then the bark Is ripped up longitudinally into slices, which when exposed to the sun to dry curl up Into quills. In the course of drying the oil, upon which the. aroma and flavor depend.
